I can say that I wouldnt be able to function without the video monitor (I use them in conjunction.) Liv will occasionally cry out in her sleep or squeak and chatter, so I can peek to see whats going on. If one of us even peeks our head in the room, she sits up so fast its unreal. LO will sometimes fuss in the middle of the night or while I'm trying to put him down for a nap or early in the morning, and if I can look and see that he is fussing but lying down, I know he'll get back to sleep, whereas if he is sitting up and playing with stuff, or standing up, I know it's time to go in and get him. We now use a foscam so we can watch on our laptops or phones. It's also more secure as it has its own IP address. Seems like many of the ladies who say they didn't need one have babies who wake up and cry right away. My LO grunts, squirms and squeaks in his sleep, and they're the Sam noises he makes as when he's waking up. We live in a pretty small ranch style house, and can always hear him cry from pretty much anywhere in the house. I don't mind checking in on him but I don't want to disrupt his sleep to do so, and the video monitor lets us see if he is awake or just fussing in his sleep. He is a fitful sleeper (this is apparently normal, especially for first 6 mos or so, according to the Healthy Sleep Habits book) and if we didn't see his eyes closed on the monitor, there would be many times we would have walked in, disturbed his sleep in the middle of his sleep transitioning, and wouldn't have the awesome sleeper we have now. We mainly didn't want a video monitor because of the security issues. We check on my son if he cries for more than a minute or so if he wakes during the night. Babies make so much noise at night that it's hard to tell what's real crying and what's not. It was nice to be able to turn on the video device and see what he was doing. Now that he's older, we like to put him down for naps and monitor him to make sure he's not causing any mischief. A video monitor is probably one of the best purchases we made.
