It's funny looking back at how little I knew, even though I planned on BFing.

As a kid, I remember seeing someone do it once. I was pretty shocked she would have a boob out! My aunts had breast reductions and FF so I never saw my cousins BF.

I babysat a TON in high school and college but never really thought about the fact I mixed bottles for some babies and not others. I think I assumed they were all on formula and the mom had just mixed the bottles ahead of time for me. Instead of realizing some were probably breastmilk! And when I worked in a daycare, I knew one mom who came and nursed her kid every couple hours (she worked next door and he wouldn't take a bottle.) I was a little surprised at first but then got used to it. Then another mom who worked there nursed her kid with a cover and I thougt that just looked uncomfortable. We had one mom who brought in pumped milk and I always thought it smelled, haha.

I mean, I was 22 at time, but it's surprising to me, looking back, how immature most of my ideas about BFing were! And even when I got pregnant I thought I would nurse for six months. A lot has changed!

Growing up I always knew my brother and I were breastfeed. I do remember in college asking my mom when she stopped and her response was that when my brother said, "eww" when she tried to feed him it was time.

Growing up, I never saw anyone breastfeed. I've never thought it was gross. I hate that breastfeeding is so taboo. It's natural and what our bodies were designed to do, so when I had my first child, I was adamant about breastfeeding her and all of my future kids.

I don't remember ever learning about it! I guess I knew what it was but I can't remember any details. My mother BF me and my brothers but I don't remember any of that. I was 3 when they were born.

I never thought it was gross or anything but when I was pregnant I thought about doing it and it seemed a little awkward. Even right after she was born it was a little weird that first time...but I LOVE it! Never would have thought that.

I wasn't ever around lots of babies as a child/preteen.

Honestly I thought breastfeeding was gross until the moment I actually breastfed my baby. Even while I was pregnant I was grossed out by the idea of it and intended on doing it for a very short period of time. Imagine how shocked I was when I finally did it and actually love it.

My brothers and I were mostly FF, but my mother became a midwife when I was a teenager and became a proponent of breastfeeding. My sister was born when I was 19 and by then mum could have been considered a lactivist, nursing my sister until 2.5, participating in nurse-ins etc. She also taught it as part of her job.

I think in New Zealand nursing in public was more common though, compared to here in Ohio.

Thank you all for your responses. This is so interesting to me. I just think it odd that if breastfeeding is getting such a push that we expect women to go their whole lives without knowing anything about it and then be successful after what, one class at the hospital? Seems a little backwards to me!! So, in our current society without much education for young women I think it's pretty amazing how many are breastfeeding!

I saw my mom nurse my brother and other women nurse in public areas. Breast feeding was just as common as bottle feeding (formula or breastmilk) and both seemed very right.

Sex ed focused on body changes and preventing adolescent pregnancy. I never had one of those egg baby projects, but breastfeeding and other baby topics would be appropriate for that part of a sex ed course.

My mom nursed my sister for a short period of time (never in front of the rest of us which is weird now when I think about it) and my aunt nursed her first baby - I remember seeing her giganic pump! It was 20 years ago. I don't know that I thought much about it though. When I got pregnant I just kind of knew that would be how I fed my babies.

I grew up around lots and lots of kids and lots of huge families and all the babies were breastfed. it was always just a "normal" thing to me! I'm #2 out of 5 children and so I saw my mom breastfeed, snd I grew up in the homeschooling community where some families have 10 or more children and they all nursed for years!

I never saw ANYONE breastfeed as a child. i never gave it a second thought until I got married and knew I wanted children someday. I'm passionate about helping it be more common knowledge in my area so maybe more moms choose it. Some here just don't know anything about the option to do it so they don't.

This thread makes me realize that I barely even thought about the concept of breastfeeding until I got pregnant. My younger brother was formula-fed, and no one else in my family ever nursed in front of me (I have no idea if my aunts nursed my cousins or not), so I was never exposed to it. My mom did mention to me that she breastfed me and not my brother. But I never saw anyone doing it.

Oh - I do remember it being mentioned in health class. The context was the different stages of growing boobs (we were in 5th grade). The doctor who gave the class explained that boobs reach their final stage of development during/after BFing. And that sometimes, they even get smaller then. So I can't say I wasn't warned about THAT! ;)

My only experience with it growing up was seeing one of my aunts do it. Nobody else in my entire family breastfed!

I definitely think it should be included in health education in schools since it is knowledge that's no longer routinely passed down from one generation to the next.

It's very disheartening that some people view it as taboo, with the notion that breasts are reserved solely for sex. A sign of the times and our culture :(

I guess Oregon is one of the most breastfeeding friendly state stats wise. I remember my mom explaining it to me as a kid. I always saw it as the natural way to feed a baby. After the first time I pumped now cows milk gives me the ick a little. I feel bad for them. And my mom was raised on a dairy farm so that always felt normal to me. I'm looking into getting our milk from a local small producer (only 3 cows) when T goes to cows milk.
