@ScarletBegonia: Mine is mostly a blur before the epi too! I think I was zoned out. I couldn't focus on much else but getting through contractions. Once the epi was in I was relaxed and aware like normal.

For DS (who is 8 years old)- I can remember quite a bit actually. There are probably some bits and pieces I'm missing.
For DD (who is 16 months)- I remember it all like it was yesterday!
I had great experiences with both.

Up until I got the epidural (at 10cm and after pushing for an hour (I'm told)) everything is a blur. My memory goes wonky from the time my husband drove me into the hospital until the anaesthetist told me to rate my pain out of 10 and it dropped with every contraction...sweet relief! My husband has started to tell me some of the stuff I said to the midwives...yikes :meh: I was not nice to them.
From the point where my pain was relieved, I remember everything crystal clearly - including the operating theatre where I had my forceps delivery. I remember asking the doctor if it was a boy or a girl when I had only delivered the head, and everyone laughing at me. I remember my son shitting all over me during skin to skin. I remember looking into my husbands eyes and thinking "what the eff have we gotten ourselves into!?".

I've never finished writing down my birth story and I'm sad because sure enough, 13 months later, it's getting fuzzy. Labor went on for a while, and my exhaustion meant I never had a firm timeline, I was hoping the doulas would have some notes to share, but they didn't, so I remember the big parts, but no longer the little details. Sad. It was honestly in the top happiest moments of my life!

For DD1, who just turned 2, yes, I remember pretty much everything. For DD2, who is nearly five months old, I only remember random bits and pieces here and there.

I fully attribute this to the brilliant epidural I had with DD1 - I was relaxed, happy, pain free, and in a great mental spot to remember everything. With DD2, I had a delayed/failed epidural - I was in so much pain and hated every single second of that labour and delivery. Once she was born, it was great, but I was so pissed off at the midwife who tried to prevent me from getting an epi, and so pissed off that I just had to suffer in agony and not get to actually enjoy my child being born, that it really coloured my experience and has thus erased a lot of it from memory. I tried writing my birth story for DD2 (DD1's story was written in great detail straightaway) and found I couldn't remember a lot of it. It makes me so sad....

When I was writing my birth story shortly after DS's birth I realized I couldn't remember a lot of the details like times and the order that things happened. I think I have a hard time remembering details because my labor was overnight (admitted late afternoon, DS was born via cs late morning the next day) and I didn't sleep more than a couple 30 minute stretches throughout the night.
