But it was rented from the owners and they'd never raised the rent so it was more affordable than most apartments (and was a 3 BR single family home). We've been renting in various cities for 10+ years, most recently NYC for 8. We love it. We love the flexibility it affords us and we have had terrific luck with our rentals. We live in waaaaay more house than we would need/want to spend on a comparable purchased house in this area. In today's market, we don't view it as a sound financial investment for us.
