@petunia354: It's one of the most contagious, and longest contagious periods. A reminder about good hand washing, for sure!

We were definitely cautious and didn't go out for a week even thought sores were scabbing. Our doctor said that the virus can live on in their feces for weeks so to be extra diligent about hand washing after diaper changes, which I found interesting.

I am aware and am infuriated when people take contagious kids out and about (it just sucks for everyone else!)

I err on the side of caution but it's really frustrating when you hear different things from different places! Our ped gave us such vague guidelines after I suspected C had hfm. They were pretty much like, yeah you have to live your life so whatever. When I was like, it is 2 weeks before Christmas- I do NOT want to infect other kids, even though I'm going crazy at home. If she's cleared I want to go out but if it's contagious I'll suck it up and stay home. Very annoying.

We just had to follow what our doctor said which was that since his fever was Saturday, and blisters came Monday that we just needed to give him 24 hrs past the point of blisters. So by Wednesday he was back at school. It was a very mild case. But had my doctor said he needed to be out for a week, we would have been.

@littlejoy: We were told the same by our doctor, once the sores had all "burst" and were drying/scabbing that we were no longer contagious. The fluid in the sores is contagious. Our daycare rule is no exposed weeping sores. So as an example LO had one on the bottom of her foot (covered by a sock and shoe) she could return. Eh, it was the weekend and I didn't see the point in sending her back for Friday ;).

I follow these rules for things like this, we haven't had HFM here yet but for stomach bugs. I get SO irritated with people come around us when they are sick, so I don't want to be "that person"...sadly it's a lot of adults that do it. It's literally one of my biggest pet peeves.

I just go with what doctor said. With HFM he said since the fever was gone it wasn't contagious any more.

For something like HFM, I would keep her away from other people as long as the doctor says to. But if it's a cold, teething, or a random fever, I will absolutely take her with me to run errands if needed. We don't schedule playdates or send her to school, but life does go on.

I'm super aware of contagious rules. I don't want to be that parent, so I stay home extra long. I SAH, so when my daughter got HFM I think she stayed home for two weeks! I try to keep my kiddos home for a few days after they stop showing symptoms with a stomach virus too.

I really don't appreciate it when other parent aren't upfront about their kids being sick, which results in my kids being sick. I have four kids, that means a whole lotta sick for a whole lotta time!!!!

@MamaG: Our daycare doesn't have a clear set of rules for HFM (though, after this event, I'm thinking they might). Our doctor said kids are contagious until the sores are healed/healing. Our neighbor is a doctor, and she was told kiddos are only contagious until their fever breaks. There's totally a wide range of opinions.

It was really, really tough to watch LO with it, so I will definitely err on the side of a longer quarantine to help other kids not get it.

For things like HFM, YES! But I really find there to be a very wide range of opinions on when the contamination period ends. We did about a week of isolation with each of our girls for HFM. Once they were cleared to return to daycare, then we no longer restricted them. Our daycare is more strict than most from comparing to what I read here.

Fortunately, our kiddos aren't very fever prone.

LO recently caught hand, foot and mouth at her little preschool (totally understandable: 15 toddlers share everything). It spread like wildfire, and all of the kiddos had (or still have it) over the holiday break.

We kept LO away from all kids from the moment she spiked a fever (knowing that it was likely HFM). We quarantined ourselves at home for a week, which means we spent Christmas at home alone, and cancelled our plans. And, even though it's been a week + 2 days since her fever, we still haven't done anything with other kids. We did go hiking and out to eat at the 1 week mark, but no direct contact.

BUT, I'm friends with a lot of the parents from her school, and noticed that many of them spent time with other kids over the weekend (playdates, museums, etc.). Most of them were like, "I just couldn't stay at home for another day!" ... WTF?!

I think there's a lack of knowledge (even with doctors) about how long HFM is contagious, and I find it frustrating.

Do you follow a general "only contagious for 24 hours after a fever" for all fevers, or do you take time to research each illness to determine when you go out?

*I do understand that sometimes you just don't know what your kiddo has (ear infection? teething? a virus like roseola, etc.?), but when you're nearly certain it's something like a stomach virus or HFM, I feel like it's your duty to keep your kid away from others.
