Did this last year - we got him a train table and he just got SO overwhelmed with everything we just never pulled it out. Finally gave it to him for his birthday in August.

This year I want to go through all his toys and donate/sell a bunch of stuff he's never had much interest in. I feel like I'm drowning.

Our LO is only 6 months old, and from what I've been hearing from grandparents, they've pretty much bought the entire Target toy aisle of age appropriate gifts. He doesn't *need* that much stuff all at once, and I don't *want* all that stuff out in my living room. There isn't much that we got him that we could set aside for later, as we only bought him 4 things for Christmas, one of them being his convertible car seat. I will be storing grandparent and auntie gifts and rotating out to keep things fresh - I don't think there's anything wrong with that.

(Edited for redundancy)

I think this year she will get to open and play with everything on Christmas and until we leave for home about a week later. When we get home I will probably put a few things away - if she asks for it I will get it out but not everything will be out.

No, we do it for birthdays when they have large parties, but they actually don't get a ton of Christmas gifts so we let them have it all :). It's spaced out since we do gifts with in-laws, my extended fam, and us 4 at different times.

No. I thought about it, but we don't have so much that they wouldn't be novel, or that they would be spoiled, if that is in question. I wouldn't let them see it at ALL if I was going that path. I wouldn't let them open a present then have it disappear (?) But I figure... let her have them this time at Christmas. She's only getting a few things.

I have done this with random surprise packages/ gifts we've been sent. Like if there are 5 individual hotwheels, give her one and save the others for a surprise when I need it.

We have done this in the past and will probably do it again if we can get away with it (she is 2). Our families spoil her like crazy and always get way too much for her, so it has been easy to make a few things disappear without her noticing. Last year, we had a ton of snow days so it was nice to have new things to play with when she was home from daycare. Her birthday was in Oct and we did the same thing. She gets everything eventually (usually within a month or two) so I don't see how it's a big deal.

we open them all (or will be), but I rotate toys in general! so I'm sure she'll gravitate toward certain things. for instance, her birthday, she got magnatiles, a ton of princess gear, and shopkins. she was aaaaall about the shopkins and princess stuff but didn't really get amped about the magnatiles, so I stuck them in the top of a closet. A few weeks later she was bored so we took them out. To me, it wasn't any different than it being on her floor and her ignoring it, you know?

After everythings opened Christmas day (and I'm doing it in the days leading up) I'm storing a lot of stuff in the basement to rotate out with the new toys after awhile. She doesn't need 8 little people sets upstairs at once lol.

I think it depends. He's not quite 2, so I anticipate him getting pretty overwhelmed pretty quickly - we opened gifts with friends on the weekend and they wrapped 4 things for him. He opened 1 and then lost interest. So I'll probably help him open everything and then see what he shows interest in - if there are some things that he's drawn to and others that he doesn't seem to care about so much I might put them away for a while. His birthday is less than a month after Christmas, so there's always that to consider. Last year between Christmas and his birthday he had so many new toys that we didn't bother giving him what we'd bought him, we saved them for rainy summer weekend treats.

@regberadaisy: Sort of off topic, I've been kicking around the idea of doing more like a 12 days of Christmas type of thing next year, letting him open one thing every night leading up to Christmas, then opening 2-3 Santa gifts on Christmas Day, so that he does get to enjoy it. I remember his birthday was confusing to him because he kept opening stuff and wanting to immediately play with it instead of opening the next gift. It ended in him just being pissed because he thought we were taking away his new toys, when we were just trying to get him to open the next toy lol

@Applesandbananas: @Bao: I let them open al the presents (wrapping). But I definitely put gifts away for later after we're done opening gifts. My in laws like to buy quantity over quality. If I let her play with everything instantly she would not enjoy everything properly. I usually save the gifts with lots of parts for later. Otherwise with all the kids there we would "lose" it all before the end of the day!

Not really. Last year we did give away a couple things from the IL's that were too old for them. Like aged 6+ with tons of tiny pieces and I had an infant and 2 year old. I don't like to save things that we can't use for a long time because I would probably forget about them!
I do want to try rotating toys more and I need to be better about putting away the ones that don't get used anymore. Maybe Christmas will be the catalyst for finally getting on that.

Coloring stuff, if they are getting thin and thick markers stashing one pack away. And from what we buy...

If I felt like my kids had too many presents, I would hold onto the presents I personally bought them. I think gifts from others should be opened and acknowledged right away. You can still rotate toys after they've been opened if you feel like there's too many out at once.

I will let him open them all, I got to as a kid as well. It rubs me the wrong way when parents stash presents like that (if it's something purchased by another person), though I understand the appeal. I bought LO a toy car for Christmas but ended up giving it to him this weekend because we just really needed something to break up the monotony of the day!

ETA - I say it rubs me the wrong way because if I purchased a gift for my nieces and nephews or something, only to find that it'd been stashed away, I'd be annoyed.

Not to physically open from the wrapping, but keep in the box or just tuck away for a bit. My girls will be getting gifts from Santa, both sets of grandparents, aunts and uncles...so they will have a lot of new things to play with, I'm sure. I feel like it's smart to put at least a few things away for a rainy day. On the flip side though, how do I do that without my 3 year old asking about them? I would feel bad. Have you/are you planning on doing this at all, or are you just going to let them open and play with it all? I mean I always got to as a kid...so maybe I should just let them?
