@Shutterbug: my Dad grew up in MA, so I mimic a lot of words like he says them - my hs friends always ragged on me for rum/room! my argument was that rum and room (even pronounced rrrruum) did not sound the same!

btw, a water fountain is actually a bubbler ;)

From Pennsylvania here! I say hoagie and cheesesteak. It's my understanding that it's a steak and cheese elsewhere. At least a friend of mine from Boston makes fun of me for saying cheesesteak instead of steak and cheese!

The further into Philadelphia I go, I hear wooter instead of water. That's a funny Philly thing though!

@imbali: a duo-tang is a type of folder where you put holes and keep the papers in.

All dressed pizza is pizza with pepperoni, mushroms, and green pepper. That was one i had NO clue was not a common term until i was on my internship in the states and we were deciding to order pizza and i offered to pick it up. My supervisor told me what toppings and i said "so I should get 2 all-dressed and 1 pepperoni?" And he really thought i said something crazy and i totally did not get the joke.

i found this link after you commented:
http://inoveryourhead.net/the-mystery-of-all-dressed-pizza/

I'm from Quebec. When I lived in the states for a year, I got weird looks like I said something absurd when I said:
Duo-tang
All dressed pizza
"Z" pronounced the Canadian way
Terrasse - enunciated the French way but I grew up thinking it was an English word

Now I live in Ontario and I have had to repeat or "correct" myself when I've said :
Deppanneur (corner store)
Metro (instead of subway)

I also say "interac" machine (as in ATM) but can't remember if that is a Quebec or Canadian thing.

I'm in the midwest, close to Canada. I'm not originally from here, so I don't sound quite like this, but many of my husband relatives and their friends sound just like this: http://youtu.be/3neOuPV2J9w

And we say "oh fer" (oh for) up here. Cute baby? "Oh fer cute!" Got a ticket? "Oh fer dumb!" And we drop "oh, yaaw" "yaa, sure" and "you betcha" on the regular. *sigh* I feel shame for what I have become :silly:

@alohaorchid: @grace: So interesting! I'm from Ontario, in between Toronto and Ottawa. I've never heard anyone refer to transports as "semis"! Sometimes we say "transport trucks" instead of just "transports". Fin is more of a slang term for the $5 bill, you'd never go to the bank and ask the teller to withdraw "$100 in fins" but if, say, you're at a store and are short on cash you might ask your husband "do you have a fin?"

I work with a lot of Texans and they're always saying that they need to, or someone needs to "get with" someone. So if ask a question and they can't answer they will say to "get with IT". They also say "fixin to" a lot.

I'm totally guilty of the "fixin to"...since I grew up in Texas. I don't say ya'll though.

My husband has a lot of interesting isms, and what's great about him is that it's all mixed up--he grew up in South Asia and learned english there, but spent a year in the UK as a teenager and then a year in Uni in Australia--and then moved to Oklahoma in the US. So sometimes he'll bust out with a crazy amalgamation of regional isms all in one sentence--

Like "I'm fixing to go to the car park to empty the bin and clean the windscreen".

fixing to = oklahoma
car park = UK/AUS/SL
bin (trash) = ?
Trunk = US
windscreen = UK?

It's so, so funny
