It was really emphasized to me growing up. DH's family is not really big on niceties, and so he doesn't say please unless he is really trying to get me to do something, and he only says thank you if he is truly appreciative, not just as routine. I really want DH to get more in the habit before we have kids, so I often remind him, "Can you say please?"
