@loki: oh, I 'please' and 'thank you' the crap outta people! Including my husband, who responds, "You don't have to thank me for doing the dishes (or whatever)." But I think he secretly feels appreciated because I do :silly:

@lizzywiz: i agree, i'd much rather someone say sorry too much than not enough! i don't think it's necessarily a negative thing and i don't think me saying sorry says anything about my value or self esteem... i'm just aware of how my actions affect other people and i want to apologize if i'm interrupting them or i have to ask them to move out of my way. i also say please and thank you excessively... i equate it with being polite, regardless of whether or not it might annoy others!

Yes. I don't apologize to ask a question or when someone encroaches on my space, like in the video, but I do apologize when I am asking someone to move, when I interrupt someone in their office at work, and often when I need help or something, as in "I'm sorry, could you...?"
The main reason I know I say it too much is when it irritates someone (usually a woman) and they say the super helpful, "Stop saying sorry!" lol.

And I am on the fence about changing it.

Part of it is just my personality. I don't like to inconvenience people, not because of some deep seated inferiority complex but because I prefer to take care of things on my own, and I wish more people felt the same way. Don't bother me for something you could easily handle on your own with a little bit of thought, you know? So when I have to bother other people, I say 'sorry.'

The other part of it is that it pisses me off when people snap, "Stop saying sorry!" How is that not rude? And I will call people out on it in a heartbeat.

That being said, I am more aware due to raising a daughter and I would like her to say sorry less than I do.

Yes, I say it all the time :meh: But not always as an apology, more like an alternative for "excuse me" like pp have mentioned.

I'm Canadian, so I probably say it a lot. I agree with the PP that it's commonly a substitute for "excuse me" here.

But like others I try to make a conscious effort not to apologize for my ideas, or being an inconvenience when I deserve to be somewhere just as much as anybody else.

@Mrs. Lemon-Lime: YES you don't need a disclaimer. I could see saying 'Oh excuse me" when yo'ure squeezing by someone or making room for them. Or if you're interrupting someone. What bothered me is the woman saying, "sorry, i have a stupid question.". Girl, you just undermined the shit out of yourself.

No, I don't. My mom does and it drives me insane. She apologizes for things that are out of her control (like my step-siblings' ridiculous behavior). My sister and I are constantly telling her to stop apologizing.

Canadian, so yeah.

@Ajsmommy: We will say sorry, if someone bumps into us. I think it's probably a more true stereotype than the one about us saying "eh" all the time.

@Baby Boy Mom: I agree with you. "Excuse me" seems to be often received as as "why are you standing there in my way", whereas "sorry" seems to be received as "I'm sorry I have to get you to move a little bit over. My apologies for being annoying".

Here's what I've noticed: a lot of times if I say sorry people are more accommodating, for example if I'm trying to get through with the stroller. I don't really mean it because I have nothing to apologize for but it's almost like apologizing for the inconvenience of them having to move over and it takes their guard down; when I say excuse me people get more annoyed. So it is what it is.

I do this as well, but I have been actively trying to correct it.

I notice though, that I mostly use it when I am going to interrupt someone, so the bigger task for me is waiting until people are finished speaking, then offering my 2 cents.

Too many people to @: but I think the point of (not) saying sorry is what many of you touched on is when saying sorry is not really what you mean. Sometimes, excuse me is the correct phrase, or simply sharing your thought/ request/action without a minimizing disclaimer.

@Ajsmommy: it's a very Canadian stereotype but I think it's really true! I mean, of course, there are crazy rude people here too (on the TTC grrr) but.. for the most part, I think we tend to be overly polite and I definitely don't hear sorry as much when I go down to the US.
