We "received" a ton of red envelopes for that reception but didn't keep any of the envelopes (it all went to DH's parents and to pay for the banquet). We never even saw or knew who gave us anything, so obviously no thank you cards were written. For my wedding I thanked them for the generous gift and told them what I will use the money for (home improvement on our new house). We got a bunch of red envelopes for our wedding (no card) so we sent thank you cards for those. We received a bunch when we went back home in the summer, and all we did was just call them to say "thank you" (they gave them to DH's parents to give to us).</p> <p>ETA: Not sure how formal your mom's friends are.
