Closed right now because in the summer the light comes in the front window at *just* the right angle to shine down the hall, into our room and onto our and blind me by about 5 am. In the fall/winter the angle changes and the door is left open.

Oops. I voted open, but really it's "depends."

In the summer, we leave it open because our bedroom windows don't open and we depend on the kitchen/living room windows to keep the air circulating. In the winter, we keep it closed to keep the warm air in. LO is only 3m, so I don't know if things will change once he can leave his room!

@Ajsmommy: oh I'm not questioning whether that is correct- I believe you and your fire safety family. Just thinking about it is making me feel panicky, the idea of a fire in between my closed door and hers and not being able to get to her. But I'm reminding myself that 1) this is all extremely unlikely; 2) we have all those working smoke detectors; and 3) the fire station is one and a half blocks away from us and have gotten here within minutes when the buildings alarm went off.

Going. To stop thinking about it too much now.

@Foodnerd81: if you have smoke detectors in every bedroom, and enough in common areas it should still be fine, like @Ajsmommy: said.

ETA: I just messaged my cousin who is a fire scientist to verify.

@Foodnerd81: a closed door actually is more to keep the fire out and to feel if its hot before opening.
A quote from this article:
"The department’s advice is tailored to the kind of building, but one common theme is that a closed door is a powerful ally. A door will slow the spread of the fire, and a wet towel or cloth at its bottom can block the smoke."
http://www.nytimes.com/2012/11/28/nyregion/a-closed-door-the-best-ally-in-a-home-fire.html?_r=0

ETA: I think that this is for worst case scenario, ie waking up while the house is engulfed in flames and you can't get to LO's room. The closed door would keep them safer longer, hoping that the firefighters could get there and go in through a window for rescue. Again, my info always came from family members who are firefighters so I always figured they were pretty educated about it and never questioned it.

@Ajsmommy: @marym: about the fire thing- but doesn't that make it more likely you won't know about the fire until later and be unable to get to the other bedrooms with kids in them? This is freaking me out a little since while we share a wall with Cs bedroom, the doors are on opposite sides of the condo. We do have smoke detectors throughout that are VERY loud and checked by the fire department every year so I'm not terribly worried but still...

We sleep with our door open usually, to help with air flow, but Cs door is closed. I hear her very clearly through the wall so it doesn't matter if doors are open or closed.

Our bedroom door is always open. I do shut LO's door, just because she goes to bed before we do. She can open it all on her own. When LO #2 comes and goes in the nursery, the door will be closed until we go to bed, then opened up for the night.

Open - I feel like we can't hear anything when the door is closed. We have a large ranch style home with four different entry doors on the opposite end of the house and it scares me to not be able to hear anything! Plus with baby on the way it just makes sense. DH prefers it closed but I win on this one

Closed, but never locked.

My father was a volunteer firefighter. He said it was safer to sleep with doors closed because they can slow down the spread of smoke in the event of a fire. But there should always be a smoke detector above the door so if smoke does start to come in, you know quickly.
