I'm 24 and married, my sister is 22 and in a long term relationship (engagement talks are happening), and my brother is 19 and single.

We do not buy birthday gifts for each other (but we do send a birthday card with personal note). We definitely still buy Christmas presents for each other though.

I have one sister and we do still exchange gifts though it's becoming more difficult each year. There's not much I need or want and she seems to have a list that goes on forever. :) On DH's side we do couple gifts for his brothers and their wives and we set a dollar amount.

we exchange gifts with my sister and her husband for christmas. my sister and i also exchange birthday presents every year. we don't exchange with my husband's brothers or their wives at all. we never have for any occasion with them. his side of the family isn't as close like that and they just aren't the gift giving type.

I exchange gifts with my siblings because I don't think they are old enough yet to understand why I wouldn't give them one. My budget for them is pretty inexpensive though. Maybe in the future once they are all married or in committed relationships we will stop.

My husband and his siblings decided to stop exchanging gifts last Christmas. Instead we all get together and go out to dinner. It is a nice change.

I only have one brother and he's not married. We generally don't do birthday gifts- just a card. Christmas is definitely still gift time though!
I think it's more the thought than the money that gets spent. My dad's siblings send a present (like candies or family games) to our whole family, rather than to individuals.

My brother gets presents for his birthday and Christmas (much smaller for the bday). We give my sister in law (bro's wife) presents at Christmas but just a card for her birthday. They do the same... my hubs gets a Christmas present from them, but not a birthday present. My husband's sister gets presents for bday and Christmas. She's single but I'm sure when she's married some day we'll give her husband a Christmas present.

I gift my sister, but much less than I used to. DH gifts his 5 siblings as well, but also way less than he used to spend. He's never received a return gift, so I'm not sure why he still bothers. I know that's not the spirit, but still.

My siblings and I have never exchanged gifts for any occasion. We all work hard and if there is something we want/need, we will buy it for ourselves, so we never found it necessary to buy gifts for each other. To mark a special occasion, we'll go out to dinner. To us, a great meal is ALWAYS better than material things!
DH on the other hand buys his sister (and parents, and grandparents, and aunts/uncles/cousins) gifts for every occasion. It pretty much drives me crazy. It's expensive and unnecessary, but it's the tradition that his family created so I just have to grin and bare it. However, I have put an end to them buying me anything for the holidays or my birthday. I'm 30, I don't need another pair of pajama pants, thanks :)

Gifting isn't supposed to be burdensome and if you don't have the money to do it then don't. A heartfelt card is thoughtful and appropriate, don't feel guilty.

I do buy them presents, but I'm starting to make stuff instead. For birthdays, I'm going to start giving them a box of cool things to do. Like, for my sister's birthday, I'm sedning her a ice cream sundea box so it'll have cones, sprinkles, some kind of topping, and maybe something else. Basically, everything but the ice cream just to give her something cool, but not expensive.

Sometimes we do, sometimes we don't. I guess it all depends on how we are all doing and if we can afford it. We haven't done individual gifts in a long time. It's always a group gift if we do it.

We do a drawing for the siblings/significant others and it works out for us! We were all abotu saving money and still having something to open when the kids are doing theirs. Maybe suggest this to help save money? It's fun to do it as a 'Secret Santa" and guess who gifted who what.

Luckily I'm the creative one in the family so I can get away with a DIY gift that doesn't cost much.

The gift giving has changed as we have gotten older. We are 36, 31, and 30. The oldest doesn't participate in anything so gifts are no issue with him. However, my sister and I still exchange. For Christmas we probably spend $50 on the couple. So I get my sister and her husband a combined gift and vice versa. (I also usually get her a little something extra) On our birthday's we don't buy a gift for the other per-say but we usually will have a girls night and take the other out to dinner or to get a pedicure or something.

On DH's side, we draw names with his siblings and set a dollar amount.

My SIL and I agreed now that we both are having kids that we will start doing Christmas and Birthday gifts to just the nieces and nephews. Usually before we would just do a gift card for dinner out and call it good.

Since my brother is still single we still do gifts. Likewise to parents and IL's. But we have it much easier since we only have one sibling each.

I have two full siblings (29 and 26) and three step siblings (HS and college age). Last year was the first year I didn't not do gifts for my step siblings. They don't give gifts to me or my brother and sister, and they are pretty spoiled overall. It makes a huge difference in our gift budget and I didn't feel like it was really appreciated. I did get gifts for my brother and sister last year, but this year we agreed to buy for our parents and my niece and my son, and skip gifts for one another. I prefer it that way. We don't do birthday gifts for one another either, but we are all long distance. I think we would if we lived close by.
I do get gifts for my husband's brother and his wife. It's my husbands only sibling and we are all really close. This is the first year that there has been a baby (my son) and I imagine in a few years we might change to kids only gifts, but not yet. Since we see them so often, they are much easier to buy for and we see them on Christmas Eve when we celebrate Christmas with my husband's family.

We are giving my brother, sis-in-law and their nephew a scrapbook I made so they can fill it with his first photos. It's not big but it's something and it's handmade. It was $20 for the scrapbook and $5 for some embellishments. I had everything else I needed (like paper and tools) at home. I have no problem cutting back on family when we need to. They understand.

Now that we are older, as in 37, 34, 28 and 26 and everyone has a boyfriend, I'm thinking of stopping gifting my siblings for their birthdays.

It's alot of money... and we are all adults now and some even parents. I was thinking of stopping gifting my siblings starting 2012, but I know it will cause drama. Sure we don't all have the same budget but I don't want to give a ridiculously low amount because then I won't feel good about it.

For sure I wouldn't stop giving my parents, step-mom and inlaws seeing they gave us everything all our life, but I'm wondering if you still give gifts to your siblings. If so, who old are you? And do you gift their SO?

(in my case, that over 400$ a year in just birthday gifts, without counting Christmas, and with a second baby on the way and my husband on sick leave... the budget is beyond tight)
