Similar to a lot of earlier comments, as a child, stockings were empty until Christmas days and we were allowed to open them before our parents were up. Always small stuff and candy. The fruit thing is because in the past it was really considered a treat to have fresh fruit in the winter, so it was special to have an orange in your stocking. (Not the same now when we live in a world where we get fresh fruits and veggies all year round.)

Now that we are adults, we still do stockings in our pjs on Christmas mornings, but there are several "Santas" and we get a fun assortment of small gifts (<$10) and candy. I really enjoy shopping for the stocking stuffers and since my mom and sisters are putting stuff in, there is not as much pressure to make sure that you have a full stocking for everyone.

We always had stockings on Christmas growing up- even the dog had one. On Christmas morning, they'd be filled with small gifts and candy. My parents still put up stockings for me and my sister at their house. DH and I haven't started the tradition in our house yet, although I may this year since now I have a LO.

Growing up St. Nick came on Dec. 5th and filled our stockings. Googling it now, it looks like it's a German tradition, I grew up in the Milwaukee area and there's a big German/Polish community there, so I guess that's why we all did it. He brought candy and small presents like books, or movies, and we always had an orange in the toe.

DH and I do stockings on Christmas now. They're filled with smaller presents like candy, movies, or lotto tickets.

Stuffed to the brim with Sees chocolates, coins, chapstick, keychains and any other trinkets my parents could find. I think 2 years ago my parents included like a rip off pad of 100 1 dollar bills. See picture because I can't think of how to word it. I love stockings!

Awww!!!! These stories are making my heart all warm and fuzzy! And kinda sad for my childhood self. Lol. My parents straight up told me there was no Santa. So we never got anything from Santa or in the stockings.

I'm going to let LO(s) open the stocking on our bed too, when she is older. What great memories to create!

And thanks for all the ideas! I think I will find socks, bows, books, stuffed animals, and more teething stuff for Ks stocking this year! I'll do DHs too, but doubt he'd fill mine. Anyone stuff their own stockings?

@cmomma17: ummm... I like that your mom did that! If I get too crazy shopping (hello, shopaholic!) I might borrow this idea too!

@shopaholic: Yes! Stockings are made to be stuffed! Similar to others above, our stockings would be full on Christmas morning. They were the only thing we were allowed to open before our parents got up! Lot's of little things (jewelry, candy, ornaments, etc.). So fun!

My mom was also awesome at making Christmas magical and a few times "elves" would visit and put something in our stocking in the weeks leading up to Christmas. An ornament for the tree, a book, stickers, pencil. Every day after school we'd rush to feel our stocking to see if an elf had come! Now I understand as an adult that my mom is a shopaholic and then couldn't wait to give us some of the things she bought, hence the invention of the 'elves' hehe

DH and I do stockings for each other now. Always candy, always a magazine or two. And fun socks have become a tradition too! Usually our stockings are so stuffed that we have to lay them under the tree. We are getting LO a stocking to match ours, but I have no idea what to put in it yet! Fun! :)

I love all the people who opened their stockings on their parents beds, that's adorable!

I can't remember, but I think the stocking presents were from Mom and Dad. They stuffed it Christmas Eve night after we went to bed. It was filled with smaller gifts when we were little (stickers, candies, lip gloss, chapstick, silly putty, mini figures of dolls or animals, etc). We were allowed to open it while we waited for Mom and Dad to wake up Christmas morning. Now, even though we're adults, they still fill stockings for us. Now they have practical things like socks, razors, chapstick, gum, candy, nail polish, nail files, etc.

Even though they aren't *exciting*, I still very much look forward to opening my stocking! I will definitely do one for all our kids each year. I actually need to still buy stockings!

When I was a kid my mom would stuff our stockings. We would get an orange and candy and little things like lotion, body wash, lip gloss, ect. My first Christmas with DH we stuffed each other's stockings but we haven't done it the 3 Christmas' since. When we have kids I think we will continue the stocking stuffer tradition.

@mediagirl: OMG. Taking the stockings to Mom and Dad's bed. That is adorable...might have to steal this tradition from you :)

For us, stockings were hung empty until christmas, then they were filled by Santa overnight (usually with small gifts like hair bows, razors when we were older, shampoo, candy). We could open these in the morning while we were waiting for my Dad to come over and Mom to wake up more. Usually this happened sometime around 4-5 a.m. ha.

And a random stocking-related story! One year my mom bought all the stuff for our stockings and it was my dad's job to fill them...and he forgot. My brother and I were heartbroken! So my mom snuck into the other room, put the stocking goodies in a bag by the front door, then called her mom and said, "I need you to call me back in a minute and just go along with whatever weird thing I say, the phone just needs to ring." Then when the phone rang she pretended it was Santa calling to tell us he was so sorry he had forgotten our stocking stuffers by the door. We thought it was so cool and bragged all day to our cousins about how Santa had called our house. Haha!

My mom always filled my stocking! It wasn't every day, just Christmas morning. Always an orange in the toe (I think that is a German thing?), candy, and small gifts like makeup or costume jewelry.

I sometimes fill a stocking for my husband and sometimes not, depending on if I got him anything small enough to fit in a stocking. He doesn't fill mine because that's like, way too much work haha. I will definitely fill stockings for my kids!

Yup! Like previous posters Santa filled the stockings and we were allowed to open them while our parents woke up. My mom made them so special and still give us a gift bag on Christmas Day for our 'stocking'. I can't imagine not having them - although they're a pain to buy for DH/DS - I find I spend a lot of time/money on them!

I'm really surprised there are many bees who ever had stocking just for decoration! My entire childhood (and my mom's entire childhood too, so not a recent thing) 'Santa' fills up your stocking. The real presents go under the tree, but the stockings have some less expensive fun stuff. When I was a kid it was usually stuff like candy and inexpensive toys. Now when I fill DH's he usually gets stuff like chocolate, guitar picks, small gift cards for fast food or coffee places, scratch-off lottery cards, etc.

We always did stockings growing up, and my parents actually still make us stockings! My dad always handled all of the stocking stuffers. It was usually necessities (tooth brushes, tooth paste, deodorant, shampoo, etc.), and then some fun stuff. We'd get lots of candy, gift cards, jewelery, movies, CDs, etc. We usually get stocking + a plastic bag of the overflow my dad couldn't get into the stocking -- he really goes all out!

I've been doing a stocking for Dan and I since we've been married, but they're definitely not as extravagant as my dad's. I hung one for Sadie last year just for fun, but I'll actually stuff one for her this year! Probably pacis, a new blankie, some puffs, etc.

My mom always buys us these type of chocolate advent calendars from the super market: http://www.amazon.com/Chocolate-Advent-Calendar-Santas-Workshop/dp/B001HLXZDU

Then, we would all go to sleep and in the morning, our stockings would be stuffed and put at our doorsteps for us to find when we came out of our rooms! It was so much fun. We got to take them over to our parents' room and open them on their bed with them!

we got small items in our stockings, little toys when we were young, and now more "practical" stuff like razors, lip balm, mini flashlight for key chain, pens,....that kind of thing. There is always chocolate, and an orange in the toe. We open ours before other presents. When we were little we weren't allowed out of our rooms until 6, and then we would go get our stocking to open on our parents bed while they woke up. This held us off so they could get up, make coffee and breakfast, etc

ETA: T is way too little to have any idea whats is going on, but I'm still so excited to do her stocking. I think it will just have socks, a puppet/finger puppet, and maybe a banana or pear-her favs!

We always got little things in our stocking. Candy, hum, hair clips, etc. We opened them after presents on Christmas morning.

@shopaholic: Advent calendars are to count down to Christmas. Growing up we each had one and there was a little piece of candy for each day. I am making this one on my girls mountain trip next weekend. I probably won't do it for R this year but next year I will do something little each day. Or will write out an activity to do for that day.
