This is a constant struggle for us. DD2 will rip a whale spout out if I’m in sight for some reason. She’ll leave one in if they do it at school or if my mom does it though. Her hair is super straight down and constantly irritating her eyes so she’ll probably learn eventually. DD1s hair only stays in if the preschool aides do fancy do’s, or when she’s with my mom. I swear they can work magic. They do super tight and intricate braids that we’ll leave in the next day! I’m not so skilled and usually just do half up/half down on her, sometimes in braid format. Pony tails don’t work because she is too wild and they come out. My MIL watches them pretty frequently and never bothers with their hair. She had 4 kids so she’s kind of my barometer she I figure if she doesn’t care, it’s NBD.

My kids constantly have butter, peanut butter, yogurt, juice from fruit etc. in their hair. I’m not giving them a bath after every meal and it’s not preventable during meals. It’s a battle I’m not willing to fight, so I just try to make them look presentable (even if that means a messy bun that hides the jelly).

I do keep my son's hair neat, I don't know if it qualifies as styled, but he gets it cut regularly and I blow it dry for him after a shower. He has textured hair so I don't need any product in it, which is also a double blessing because it doesn't show the sins of my haircutting skills.

@wrkbrk: my sons hair grows the same so I've been parting it on the left side after bath so his bangs are starting to sweep across his head now instead of flat down. Trying to give him a little part!

@wrkbrk: super cute! My ds’s hair is shorter so I’m not sure how much difference that would make but my favorite thing to use on him right now StyleSexyHair (the big sexy hair brand) Slept In Texture Cream. It has a lot of hold which we need.

My daughter has gorgeous ringlets. We wash every other night (sometimes more depending on how sweaty she gets) and I use my hair products on her. After washing/conditioning, I use Deva curl cream and comb it through with a wide-tooth comb. It air drys and she sleeps on it. It's usually lovely bouncy ringlets the next day. I always put a barrette in the middle to keep it out of her face. Sometimes I do a ponytail, but she loves to leave her hair down. Occasionally I'll do a French braid, but only on weekends because I'm slow and we don't have time on school mornings.

Someday I want to dry it straight, just for fun because she loves when I do my own hair straight.

My DD1 has long, thick, dense wavy hair with lots of flyaway curly bits at the front hairline. I wash it once a week, and I always dry it with the hairdryer. I apply a creamy coconut leave in conditioner, and I will dry it with the diffuser so that she doesn't feel her hair is being blasted. Then I will braid it at night before bed. For school days I rub a small amount of the same leave in conditioner onto her hair, and then pony tail at the back and plait the pony tail to keep it neat. I do have to put some clips in the front to tame the flyaways. By the end of the day- its a mess.

DD has fine curly hair and I try to do something every day to keep it out of her eyes. It's usually a whale spout or two or barrette. She won't hold still for long so it has to be quick. I wet it down, brush it and style. This morning she wanted a bun, which I've never done so I fudged it and I will ask her this weekend if we can practice it....

LO has curly hair, just like mine. For most of the year, I put a little leave in conditioner after her bath and let it air dry. If the mornings, I refresh the curls with some spritzes of water and a little smoothing serum. I also use a clip to keep her hair out of her eyes. When it’s really cold, I blow dry her hair straight after a bath (but I only wash her hair 2-3 times a week) bc it’s too cold to go to bed with wet hair. Honestly, it’s curly again by the morning, just a little less crazy.

My 2.5 year old has really curly hair. Most days, I spray it with a detangling spray, comb it straight, then scrunch it back into curls. That's how she goes to daycare. On the weekends, I put bows or barettes in it, since I don't have to worry as much about her losing them at daycare. For gymnastics class, I do pigtails.

Depends on the day for us. My 4.5 year old has curly fine blond hair and it can look pretty wild and crazy- which I do sort of love. I usually spray with water and a little strangling spray and use a wet brush to comb it out. Then we ether leave it, do a side barrette/ bow, ponytail, or French braids- she requests Anna or Elsa braids but they take a while to do! She just got her first haircut this weekend and it made a big difference in how bouncy her curls are!

My 2 year old has fine straight hair and insists on pigtails with bows every day. It’s adorable.

@hilsy85: @nana87: mine looks like a combo of these. It’s a hot mess. She probably needs a hair cut soon. She’s nearly 2.5 and hasn’t had one yet.

My mum suggests argan oil to tame hair a bit after shampooing. Put it in wet and comb and it actually does make a difference to what it looks like when it’s dry. I don’t own a hair dryer and I do feel they are damaging for hair so I probably wouldn’t bother with one for a little kid since I don’t bother with one for myself. I also shower before bed and am totally fine with going to bed with wet hair and it hasn’t caused issues yet for my daughter either.

I wish! I’m pretty good at doing kids hair, but my DD1 hates anything in her hair. I would love to put it in pigtails or braids and bows. Instead I keep her bangs trimmed and brush it 2-3x a day.

No, we are so bad about doing her hair or even brushing it. And then she gets knots in it so our solution is to put it up in a pony so you can't really see them. :silly: We did cut her bangs around age 2 for the same reason that we didn't do her hair and it just was in her face constantly. My DH has finally agreed to a regular haircut (don't get me started...) so I'm excited to have shorter hair that hopefully won't get tangled very easily!

I'm with you that I wouldn't feel super comfortable blowdrying my LO's hair regularly, it just seems early to start a habit like that.

Depends on my motivation level and who we are seeing that day. I try to brush it daily, or at least every other day bc otherwise it gets really tangled. But other things like pony tails or bows prob happen 3-4x a week and the rest of the time it is just wild! This is what it often looks like 😬

Do you use any products in your kiddos' hair, or use a blow dryer or other tools?

Lo1 has pretty wild, wavy hair that is still kind of uneven in the front (she's had a few haircuts but her bangs are still growing out). I try to at least brush it and use de-tangler, and then either pull the bangs out of her eyes with a clip or put it up, but she doesn't always let me. When we were visiting my mil recently, mil got into the habit of blow-drying lo1's hair after her bath, mostly because it was really cold out and we didn't want her hair to be wet when we went outside. But, it also looked WAY better and more tamed! I feel a bit torn though, because even though it looked less crazy, I worry that the heat will be bad for her hair in the long run, and I also don't want lo to feel she HAS to have it styled/not just natural. I also have really different hair than her, which complicates things--mine is super curly and I put in products but just let it air-dry. But I also feel like my parents didn't know how to do my hair when I was a kid (they brushed my curly hair-horror of horrors! haha) and I don't want it to look like a hot mess just because I don't know how to manage it.

Eta pic to show you what I’m working with!! It’s partially braided back here but she wouldn’t let me fix it so that the front part was out of her eyes...
