I took a DHA supplement in the first trimester (I take Target brand prenatals and bought the Target brand DHA supplement separately). My OB said that there was really no proof of it helping either way but there was also no harm. So, we agreed I would take it for the first trimester and could ditch it after, which I did.

Yes, Wellness Essentials for Pregnancy by Metagenics (which I order through my primary care physician's account.) It's a daily packet that comes with 2 muti tablets, 2 calcium/mag tablets, and 3 softgels (choline, EPA, and DHA). My OB actually isn't that big on prenatals, but he said I could continue taking the daily packet.

My doc also prescribed me a prenatal even though I've been taking the gummies for a year. One pill is the vitamin, and the other gel thing is the DHA supplement. I have to take both, once a day. Beware of the fishy taste with the DHA pill!

i wanted to stop taking my dha but my ob said i needed to take them the entire pregnancy. however, i have read that actual fish is better than pills! so keep eating fish - i think salmon and flounder is good for you! but i'd ask your ob at your next appointment.

I called the nurse and asked about this today because I just changed over to the gummies, which have DHA but not nearly as much as I was getting. She said it was ok, and up to me. I'll probably add a supplement later, but for the last couple of days, not much.

Another way to get extra is through dha fortified milk. I buy Horizon organic milk that has algal dha added to it, and it's no more expensive here than regular organic milk. For me it's been an important add, since I'm having trouble stomaching fish during pregnancy.

But I also take naturemade prenatals with dha and epa.

My OB said that DHA is a great addition, but not necessary. She also prefers patients to get supplements through diet rather than pills, so she was happy with what I was getting from the amount of fish/seafood we were eating.

You can get DHA through fish oil pills or from algae based pills. I now take a high amount of DHA everyday to battle inflammation/pain in my hips and the D.O. and O.B. both recommended taking an algae based DHA supplement instead of fish oil due to the amount I take and concerns over mercury. I take "Expecta" brand - I wasn't able to find it in the vitamin store in my town, but you can order it online. Hope this helps!

DHA is a type of Omega-3 fatty acid, which is in fish oil. So, if you take fish oil you do get DHA, but there's also the issue of possible mercury from the fishies. (I believe... anyone feel free to correct me if I'm wrong!)

I'm not sure if any of that helps :) my prenatal has DHA in it, so I'm not even sure why I know any of that!
