I have noticed when a lot of kids get sick in class it is the kids who directly sit by one another, in clusters. Usually starts with a coughing kid. I was shocked to hear from the principal that this year, out of 240 kids, on one day, he had 40 kids out. That's a ton!</p> <p>I think they don't enforce hand washing as often and they for sure do not disinfect to the level of preschool. I think depending what the trip is then yes DS can miss school. As long as he's not struggling and behind. Honestly, it's usually not a huge deal. When it does get frustrating is when we aren't given advanced notice and are expected to get a week's worth of homework together in an hour or two. Lo's school isn't an issue yet, but that will be another issue starting next year as well. I was nervous about it and looked up the truancy rules to find missing school is discouraged but nothing would actually happen. LO missed two weeks and it was fine. I think while she is still relatively young (mostly K, maybe a bit in 1-2 grade), we might miss a day here or there to extend trips. But mostly we will try to sync up with when she at least has a day or two off. </p> <p>But we also don't have any local family, and extended family is often the reason for (or included on) our trips. The issue is that in public school in my state, you are allowed 10 days per year to be out. If you are out more than that, a letter is sent home and a copy goes to the state recording office. It wasn't a big deal at all, but I probably would avoid doing it when she starts school. But my son's school has a year round type of schedule, so he has breaks every 6 weeks.
