Definitely just a data point. After all, they only know what they've been taught and they haven't been taught everything. Plus, there are so many things that they are obligated to say/recommend that may not apply to my specific situation.

It's just one more consideration. I have to make these choices for myself, so I'm responsible for doing my own research and deciding what's best for me.

It really depends on the situation. If what she says makes sense or agrees with me or what I've read, then I follow what she says. If I think something is just not right, then I peruse it more. This has backfired though. There have been times where I've resisted the doc's recommendation only to find out, when I finally started following what she said, that she was right all along.

There's Listeria outbreaks in spinach and lettuce!

I take it as another date point. If the doctor's opinion matches up with what my research has proven, then great! If it contradicts my own research, I might question the doctor's opinion and research further.

It depends. For my mental health I treat it more like gospel because I know that I can really mess with my health by looking things up on my own. BUT I always run things by DH and can ask for a second opinion if something seems weird.
For pregnancy, there was some of both.
For things I know less about that are not life threatening, I like to just let the doctor do his/her thing. (I don't want to have to question their decision to stitch me up.)
I always ask the doctor questions to make sure I understand why he/she says what he/she is saying.

Data point. But in the case of medications I trust her more than other sources. For example I know many meds say on the box that they're not to be used in pregnancy, but I also know that's kind of a legal CYA move for them in many cases so if my doc tells me it's ok I believe her.

For me it's definitely just an input. I think I used to be more trusting of doctors, but since my first pregnancy I've become a lot more hands on about doing my own research. It helps that DH is in med school because I have access to the newest research.

definitely as a guideline. I make well-researched decisions on a consistent basis and sorry to say, not all doctors are right 100% of the time. And I happened to grow up in a family with many misdiagnoses or no diagnoses at all, so I've always been a tad skeptical of the medical field - perhaps more than some.

Generally though I have started to use DS's dr as a cop out. When people would make comments about his size (being on the small side) I would just say the doctor says he is really healthy! Or other such comments, I use my dr as back up and it always shuts people up!! Thankfully I have a great doctor who totally backs me up as a parent.

I take it as one point of consideration. Doctors are vulnerable to having an opinion that isn't evidence based, is based on their personal history/ideas/bias, nor does it take every situation into consideration, just like the rest of us!

I think it depends on if my doctor's advice goes along with my existing knowledge on the topic. For instance, my doctor said that caffeine was fine, which fit with what I had heard from others. Based on that, I felt comfortable continuing to drink coffee. She also told me that using certain acne medications was fine, but I heard that other people had been told not to use them. I did more research on my own and came to my own decision not to use them. So I think it really depends...but whatever the doctor says, I'm likely to do more research on my own. So I guess her word is just one input (but a heavily weighted one--I trust her more than I trust what my aunt says she did during her pregancy, for instance).

I've noticed that some people will take their doctor's word as final, and others don't.

For example, on the subject of which foods you can eat or not during pregnancy, I've seen statements along these lines: "The doctor said that eating frozen yogurt from a machine during pregnancy was ok, so I've been eating it in moderation."

Others though will sometimes overrule the doctor: e.g. "My doctor said that frozen yogurt from a machine wasn't ok, but I looked it up and the main concern is listeria and my local yogurt place cleans the machines daily (I used to work there) and so I eat it daily."

What about you: do you take your doctor's word on an issue as final? Or do you take it as just one input into your decision?
