I want my kids to grow up like I did, thinking restaurants are for special occasions or Fridays. Not sure how this'll work out, but I thought it was a good lesson in responsibility for one's own self (cooking at home, being healthy), so I'd like to try to adhere.

When DS was really little, we went all the time since he would just sleep in his infant seat. Now that he's more alert, he still stays in his infant seat or sits in my lap. As long as I order a meal that I can give him bites of, we're good. But for dinner, we need to be out of the restaurant by 8pm as he gets tired fast. Once he's more mobile, we'll re-evaluate.

It can be a lot of work but we do it because the only way that we get to eat out ourselves is to bring the LO. If there aren't a lot of kid friendly places by you, go to a regular restaurant (not a super fancy one) right when they open for breakfast/lunch or for a really early dinner like at 5 pm when the restaurant is empty and you won't disturb many others if the LO gets restless.

park slope is very kid friendly so we try to go to places that we've been before. charlie does not like sitting in a high chair, so the best places have booths where we can trap him. he is much happier being able to move around a little bit than being strapped into a chair. a cup of ice also keeps him quiet for quite some time!

We have two or three kid-friendly places nearby that we frequent. We love the local places with "kids eat free" nights, not only to save the $5 on the kids meal, but because they're always packed with loud families-- so if RJ is loud, no big deal! Plus he's always entertained by watching the other kids. We also love the Whole Foods hot bar-- we'll grab a container of mac & cheese for RJ and either sit outside and feed him, or let him play in the play area while taking bites of food.

We eat out at least 4 to 5 times a week with DD who's 28 months old. However we have 'trained' her to sit in her portable boaster seat since she could sit in one until we are all done. That said, recently, she has been wanting to get up before we are done so distraction techniques are required e.g. giving her some 'dessert'. It helps that we usually patronize places where she loves the food. In the beginning, we had to scarf down our food but as she got older, it has been possible to enjoy a 1.5 hours meal :)

My husband and I used to eat out a lot as well. But now we cut it down to just weekends. Our son is now two and we've been taking him along with us. Because we've always had him with us, he is pretty used to the setting and is pretty well behaved. We're also lucky that we have a lot of kid friendly restaurant options here. We always have early dinners to beat the crowd and always order for him as soon as we sit down so that he can be occupied with his food.
It's a little harder now as he's refusing the high chair more. Hes just more mischievous when he's not strapped to a seat. We also have a 3 month old now and find that it is much harder with two. So it looks like our dining out days are limited at least until she's a bit older.

Do you guys/gals take your LOs out often to eat?

Husband and I used to dine out pretty often before we has DD and I often take her with us now that she's here. But arghh, the kid friendly options we have are far and few between.

And between the two of us, husband is definitely the more reluctant one to want to take her along only because we probably spend 2x the amt of time getting out the door and 2x the time in the restaurant.
