No, we only use coats that are car seat safe in the car.

It's sooo annoying but I want to be safe!

Yes. We take off our DD's winter coat and our baby has a cover for his infant seat - so no coat either. We live in Canada, it's super cold, we get lots of looks. I might not be so anal about it if we didn't live in a rural area so when we drive it's on a major highway and with lots of semi truck traffic. I'd just rather get the looks...

Anything that would require I readjust their straps comes off in the car. They dress on layers, always have hats and mittens, and we bring blankets.

I take car seat safety very seriously. Any child passenger while I'm driving won't be in a puffy coat under a five point harness.

Doesn't get cold enough here for puffy jackets but our LO's take off their sweaters/jackets (even thin ones) when getting in the car. They just don't like to wear them so it works out for me, though it can be annoying when we are in a hurry haha.

Yes, I always take off their puffy jackets before putting them in their car seats. Some jackets are okay, like E has a very thin north face, and I don't have to adjust the straps if she's wearing it. I also think the fleece infant bunting suits are okay.

It doesn't get cold enough here for puffy winter coats but I take off DD's jacket if I would have to loosen the straps if she kept it on. I feel that it's better safe than sorry... I usually just take it off.

Yes, every time. We live in frigid upstate NY but have gotten really good about coat off every time. The bulk changes the dynamics of the restraints. If it's really cold, we offer him the coat on his lap over the belt or a blanket.

LO has a 3-in-1 coat from Children's Place. It has a fleece liner and a windproof shell. Combined it's a heavy-duty winter jacket. We walk to the car with both. Take off the shell and buckle into the carseat wearing the fleece. It's not that big a deal once I got used to it.

LO wears a North Face fleece over whatever layers she had indoors, and then we also use this car seat poncho as an extra layer.

http://www.amazon.com/Summer-Infant-Poncho-Reversible-Fleece/dp/B00ODZ5BQG/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1453221200&sr=8-2&keywords=car+seat+poncho

It took some getting used to for LO (and DH) but now we really like it.

We have a puffy coat for being outside and not in a car.

We keep a plush blanket in the car to cover him with and if I'm taking him into daycare or something like that, I'll just wrap him up in it and carry him in, rather than trying to put his coat on. It's a brief 15-20 steps so if it's not really bitter cold, we'll do without.

i keep the carseat straps at a comfortable/safe length for no coat. if he's wearing something that fits under that (like a sweater or patagonia fleece) then it's fine- anything thicker has to come off.

This is huge in terms of safety - if you aren't going to have the straps fastened properly (i.e., too loose), then the seat cannot properly protect your child in case of an accident.

It's worth taking the time to put the coat on after they come out of the carseat. We put LO in a thin sweater and then put a blanket on top of the carseat if it is cold in the car. If she needs a real coat, it can be put on after she comes out of the seat.

We have fleece coats specifically for wearing in the car. My parents think I'm crazy and feel bad for my kids, but our cars warm up quickly and they have blankets too, so I know they're fine. For playing outside, they have thicker warmer coats.

@irene: I saw a similarvideo on the Today show (and watched twice)... but in the video they didn't have the front strap up on the dummy-babies chest so he flew out. I think if the strap had been up, it would've have happened that way so they totally dramatized it.
That said, I had bought a coat that was small enough to be worn in the car seat but since he's outgrown it his new coat is fairly puffy. When it's -7 degrees out like it has been (and we're just going 5 miles to daycare), I leave it on and just make sure the straps are really tight. For long trips I will take his coat off.

We buy a warm puffy coat that is carseat compatible. It takes a little more legwork to find a coat that will compress the right way in a carseat, but it's easier than having to take it off and on every day multiple times. http://carseatblog.com/24645/baby-its-cold-outside-winter-coat-suggestions-for-kids-in-carseats/

We have packable down shells that we use for car rides (those down coats that squish down to letter size). They keep him warm but are thin enough that I know they're okay for carseat use. I can also fold it down and put it in my purse when we're at a restaurant, play gym, etc.

If we were going skating or sledding I'd bring his coat and snow pants and put them on him when we arrived at our destination.

@peaches1038: we used something like that! Ad long as it's not super puffy, which it doesn't look like it is, I think it's fine!

We do leave coats on, but she has specific car seat coats that we use for the car. I bought a Patagonia down sweater and a baby bunting last year. This year, we alternate between a fleece and an LL Bean coat that is easily compressible. We have street parking and no remote start, so we have to be careful about keeping her warm!

We do - I had had him in the car in his winter coat one day and the next day I put him in without and I was horrified by how much I had to tighten the straps. I usually wrap his coat around him like a blanket and put the hood up, and then put either his coat or a fleece jacket over him for the drive.

I find it really interesting that car seat safety in Europe is so much more relaxed, especially considering that Sweden is probably the most strict! When I was living abroad, I bought a Swedish convertible seat for extended rear facing and people thought I was a complete nut. As for coats, as my son has gotten older, I've relaxed the rules, but I really probably shouldn't. We also keep a blanket in the car.

Yup! Anything thicker than his fleece jacket comes off. Even DS knows it does and he's 2.5. He'll get in the car, take off his jacket, then climb into his car seat. Even if I'm not the one putting him in the car seat, the tells DH or whomever is back there with him "Jacket!" as in hey! I need to take off my jacket.
