I take migraine medicine because it's horrible without them. Elsewise, I suffer through every other kind of pain. DH however goes to the dr anytime he's ill and goes on prescription meds as necessary.

I'm like you MrsBee. I take meds if it's really bad. I just think that my body is tough enough to handle it on its own. haha

I am cautious of what I take, however I'm not one to suffer just to avoid putting medicine in my body if I need it. I suffer from allergies and would be miserable 3-4 months a year without taking daily medicine. It is there for a reason in my opinion.

I think there is a difference between taking prescribed mediations to manage medical problems (like diabetes, depression, etc.) and taking OTC stuff at the drop of a hat.
I'm all for appropriately managing medical conditions through medicine and I'll take pain relievers if I feel a headache turning into a migraine.
For the most part, though, I try to use natural remedies. Did you know lots of headaches are caused by dehydration? Drinking enough water can often eliminate the need for pain killers.

I got a flu shot for the first time in my life this fall and (knock wood) I haven't been sick yet, whereas last year I had the flu 3 times. Otherwise, the main things DH and I take are aspirin for headaches and pepto bismol for upset stomachs. We don't go anywhere without those two medications. I take a 1/2 dose of excedrin pm when I am exhausted/overtired and cannot sleep, which happens about twice a month.

@winniebee: I had my flu shot in the middle of TTC. From everything I read, it's good to do for pregnant women. What's bad is that I can't remember all of my shots recently. I knew that my husband and I had some shots last year, but I can't remember which ones. It's one of the nice things about my doctor's office is that they can look on the online profile for me and check it.

As someone with chronic knee pain and really horribly painful periods, I used to take lots of pain killers, both prescription and over the counter. I started reading about the long-term effects of these drugs on the body and decided to stop. I only take something now if all the natural remedies aren't working--but they usually work for me.

@Boogs: its a pretty bad disease. Meds weren't working for my hubby so he had to have a colostomy. And now he's all cleared up and he's getting it reversed! But he still has to give himself a shot once a week, and I'm nervous it's going to come back. Hope your family members are doing well!

Ditto to @venice4504. However, since being pregnant, I have really tried to avoid taking medicine. I have taken tylenol twice - once for a bad headache and once when I had the chills/felt like I was getting a fever. I also got the flu shot and tdap vaccine.

I've always been in the camp of "Take medicine, feel better." Only being recently pregnant, I'm more nervous about certain medications. I'm asthmatic. I did a Dr. Google search to see if I could still take my asthma meds since I've noticed with the cold weather and someone growing inside me, that I'm more cautious. I took a shot of my Advair a few days ago and will again tomorrow to keep my asthma at bay.

With the new cramps, I'm not taking any Tylenol, so I can gauge them. So, currently, I'm in avoidance mode. I'll know more after my first appointment.

I avoid as much as possible. in hs I had a pill dissolve in my esophagus & eat away some of the muscle. it made my esophagus swell & press against my trachea & I wasn't able to eat or drink anything b/c it hurt so badly. I had to be on medication that coated my throat so that I was able to eat & drink until it healed & while I was never a huge medicine taker before, now I don't take anything unless I'm explicitly told to by a doctor. I can deal with everything else.

I have to take it, I have no choice. You have to catch migraines early or it becomes too late, so I take something at the first sign of one.

My hubby has crohns so he has to take a lot of meds too. I really didn't want my lo to be like us, but of course she's already taking meds for reflux.

I try to avoid it unless I'm really miserable. That being said, I have a low pain tolerance so if I get a headache and it goes on for more than an hour, I'll take some ibuprofin. If I have a cold, I will take cold medicine to help me feel slightly human.

God, I miss Nyquil.
I'm normally not really spare with the OTC meds when indicated (I'm not worried about contributing to worldwide ibuprofen resistance or anything), but since BFing, I've been lazy and haven't really bothered to look into what I'm allowed to take beyond tylenol and ibuprofen, so I stick to those.

@Boogs: Ditto, I feel like it weakens the body.

HOWEVER, once I get to severe pain, I do start taking pain killers on a regular basis to see if pain management is possible before checking in with the doc (because it's diagnostic to know if meds are enough to help or not).

I do not taking cold meds anymore, but I used to take them when I was a school teacher because having a clear voice was very important for my job.

Basically, there are only a very few meds I'll take, pepto and tylenol. And prescription stuff my doctor recommends. And multivitamins and calcium.

I gave in and took Zofran when I suffered from horrible all day sickness. It didn't make things completely better, but it did help me be able to somewhat function.

Otherwise if I have a cold or other sicknesses I avoid medicine and I feel like it has paid off because my LO and DH have had two bad back to back colds in the past month and at most I just felt a bit under the weather for a day or two...my DH took medicine, I didn't.

I get headaches all the time and used to always take something to get rid of them. When I got pregnant with my first, I stopped taking any medicine and all during breast feeding didn't take anything. Now I'm pregnant with #2 and have not taken anything. So that makes almost 2 years without any medicine, which is amazing for me because I used to always take something for every little thing.

I try to avoid as much as possible. I got put on Ibuprofen therapy for my back, and now I am pretty immune to it, or any type of pain killers like that... Tylenol, aspirin, etc. I don't take it anymore either.

I will give DS meds when he is sick because I don't want him to be in pain or hurt. I try to do more natural though. Like honey for cough syrup, etc.

Are you the type of person that takes medicine every time you have a headache/are sick? Or do you suffer until you can't take it anymore?

I am somewhere in the middle. I take painkillers if I have a horrible migraine, but I try to avoid it if I can. But I am a believer in Nyquil!

When Charlie is sick, I don't like giving him medicine too often, but I can't stand when he's in pain so I'm not super conservative when it comes to giving him tylenol/motrin either.

What is your philosophy when it comes to medicine?
