Lately I mostly read. I ask questions, I answer them, we talk about things we see, but I don't usually offer specific explanations without being asked. I think with enough exposure she will pick things up on her own.

I stop to explain if I'm pretty sure my 4yo hasn't heard the word before. For example, we just finished reading Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. It was the first time we read a chapter book, so I'm not sure how well he followed. But we stopped at the end of each chapter to do a quick recap, or I would ask a few questions, like what color something was, and I also explained some vocab, for example, "corridor". In general, we discuss a lot when we read because he has so many questions and is curious about everything!

My LO isn't here yet...so I am going to answer as a teacher (though each teacher will have their own answer.)
I think there is merit to both allowing readers to "grapple" with a complex text and offering explanation. When readers constantly have the explanations, they often rely on that and not the text itself. Additionally, they aren't required to use context clues to create meaning for unknown words. If the goal is to have them go beyond comprehension to learn a lesson or analyze the text in some way, then offering explanation can help facilitate that. Just my two cents.

I would just read through, but my LO asks a zillion questions as we go along and if she doesn't understand something she asks. I follow her lead.

We stop to talk things through, and usually don't just read from beginning to end - I talk through any questions, explain details, acknowledge details that they point out, etc.

My 3 year old asks a ton of questions so we stop to answer and explain stuff to her.

At LO's age we aren't there yet but I do explain things. There's a book about bears and the whole text is "I love you this much... I love you high... I love you low..." But the bears are doing all kinds of stuff so she will point to different things and we will talk about the different objects and colors and actions, even though the text doesn't reference any of that. This is just one example. It takes approximately 6 years to read one book. :)

Yes, when they were younger we were mostly stopping to discuss the pictures but now we stop to explain or translate words and concepts a lot. It definitely takes more effort! If I'm just reading the text I can sort of zone out...

@Greentea: You read 100 books a day?! That's an entire month for me (I do 3 a night).

@mrbee: my main goal is to finish the book, sometimes, I am so tired that I will literally not remember reading parts of it, but I try to power through.

LO LOVES to read, so no, I definitely don't just read the texts. We probably read at least 100 books a day (no, seriously, thank you library), and I'd go crazy having to read some of them over and over. So, I do all kinds of things to make them interesting.

I'll sing them, I'll count different things on the pages, talk about concepts, colors, everything and anything and she likes the connections drawn between different things.

@looch: So true, isn't it amazing how much detail kids can notice sometimes?! Even after dozens of reads, sometimes the kids will point out things I've never seen before!

We talk about them, my son usually points out some obscure detail in the picture on the page and wants more details around it. And I also explain what certain words mean and sometimes, I ask my husband to say a certain word in another language .

I usually prefer to just read the text and answer questions as they come up, but now I talk a bit more about the tricky words and concepts that come up. Like one book talked about how a wolf was slinking away, so I showed the kids what that might look like. Or we define words - I had no idea how many words were just sailing right over their heads!

All that said, I have a personal preference for just reading the words and not talking about it until after the reading is done! But I guess that's not how my kids learn.

Do you stop to talk about tricky words and concepts when reading your kids books? Or just read the text...
