Before, I was looking at the best school district, then I found out that all parents in this district put their child's name on a waiting list for kindergarten at birth, and now I'm wondering whether or not I should put her in "late" (as the school's calendar cuts off REALLY early in the year for birthdays)!</p> <p>I used to laugh and shudder a little at the idea of having a baby on a waiting list for school. We are living overseas now but I really worry about what we would do if we were to return to the States. We're going to have to make a huge choice to move or stay in about 5 years... coinciding with LO's entrance into kindergarten. In our current school district, our town has independent schools and they are wonderful. I was actually thinking the other day about an area where geographically I'd want to live, but I'm aware that the high school there is AWFUL.. There is a lot of gang activity at the nearest High School and there is low-income housing next to one of the closest elementary schools. I think we will be moving to a different area before our child hits High School. </p> <p>We have 13 years or so until then, so our plan is to pay down the house as much as possible so we don't have a big mortgage when we move. Even though it will probably be (at least) 8 years before our first child enters elementary school, I have done A TON of research on the school systems in the area we might be moving to! In fact, I am very well versed in their charter/magnet school system now. It seems kind of silly because it will all probably change by the time our kids go to school, but I feel like it's important to be thinking about. I would hate to buy a home in a neighborhood that turns out to have terrible public schools and have no choice but private, when there are good schools the next neighborhood over. </p> <p>Anyone else think about this a lot? </p>
