If anyone was curious about Kim pumping in Paris (is it weird I wondered about that?! Haha!), apparently she did not, but she did BF for a few months.

@sunny: I guess I just don't see the need for one person to take ALL night wakings just because the other works? Edited down because I'm way off topic. Hopefully you already read.

Edit to add sorry for the thread jack, I probably shouldn't have even said anything in my comment!

We are planning on taking all the help we can get. Both me and DHs families live overseas. We will be hiring a nanny to help some and a night nurse for a few nights a week. I don't function well without sleep, and I want to be present, awake and not cranky for my baby.

I don't think you can generally say one way or the other, about an entire group of people. It is possible to pump and have a night nurse give breastmilk in bottles. It's also not an all-or-nothing thing: some babies get both formula, and nurse. Having nighttime help doesn't mean a mom can't also nurse.

I'm not sure if I can believe a lot of celebrities breastfeed, but I'm sure it's on average the same as non celebrities (:

In regards to the law suit... I don't see a problem with her suing for lack of overtime pay and missed lunch breaks. Being a nanny is a job and in California you get paid overtime and are required to get a lunch break...if she was denied these then I think she is completely entitled to back pay. I would expect that from any job.

I would hire a baby nurse if it wasn't a financial hardship. Right now I would actually pay $500 for someone to sooth my baby until the morning.

I EBF but in the first couple of weeks if someone had brought her to me, I feed, then they take her and change and burp and sooth to sleep, that would have been great. Especially after the adrenaline for the first couple days wore off. So yeah I get it.

@googly-eyes: at least for my DH and I, I feel like since he works outside the home I really prioritize his sleep over mine because he needs to be alert driving to work, awake during meetings and at his desk and he can't take a nap during the day. If I'm feeling tired I have the option of staying home (not driving) and taking a nap when my baby naps.

I think most celebrities bf. I would never hire a baby nurse. If I had the money that a celebrity had, i would take as much time as I needed to do everything for my child. As much as I HATE night time wakings, it is all apart of parenting your child and even those crappy nights make you feel like you accomplished something as a parent. But that is just my personal feelings!

@shopaholic: see to me that's a choice the celeb made to stop breastfeeding. I'm not judging as such but nobody held a gun to her head and made her go to work for twelve hour days.

I can see the appeal of having a night nurse every now and then but a lot of the time I really love being snuggled up nursing with LO in the dark.

@runsyellowlites: I guess it would depend in part on a persons SAHP routine but I never napped with LO. Aside from being in school she never napped long enough. Also if one has more than one child at home. Even if one is able to nap, naps don't substitute for night sleep in the long run. It's one thing if its just a period of crap sleep, but I feel like anyone would want a good night of sleep after months.. Of course this doesn't apply to those with great sleepers, but it wouldn't regardless of ones work status. So if you have the funds to get that sooner (celebs)... I don't blame "you" (them.) Yes it needs to be balanced with doing it themselves some of the nights and quality time during the day but it can work.

@californiadreams: I do think they breastfeed, yes. BF doesn't necessarily mean EBF. Also, if you have the money to hire help, why not?

On a sidenote I never get what people mean when they say it's different if one has to be at work the next morning, as though people who work outside the home deserve to be well rested but those who SAH can be sleep deprived for the first few months to years of their child's life. I now have done both with a LO who isn't sttn regularly anymore...and I need my sleep both ways...

@sunny: ya the lawsuit sounds rridiculous. Aleast how it is described in the article - and if it were true as described, why would she work there for 2 years?

@runsyellowlites: I'm home for a year on mat leave a DH has been working full time but after about maybe 1.5-2 weeks in I told him I can't do the night wakings by myself so he started doing diaper changes, bringing LO to me and taking turns putting back to sleep. SAHM or not, you need to sleep to function! Not to mention that taking care of a baby full time is a very demanding full time job so I don't see how one parent should prioritize getting sleep over the other regardless of who WOH or is SAH. That's just my way if looking at it though! Everyone does what works for them.

I don't think I'd hire one for that long, but boy would it have been nice in those first 6 mths. DH works & I'm home so I did 100% of the night wakings... how great would it have been to have someone bring me P to nurse & take her back to bed. I know lots of dads that do this for their bebe & wife, but when yours isn't doing that how different really is it to hire someone to? Idk.... 2 years does seem like a long time though. *shrugs shoulders*

I want to say "well their life dictates this and they are doing what they need to do" but I don't believe that.
Parenthood involves revolving your life around your child as best you can. Work, by all means, but cut your hours if that means someone else is essentially raising your child. God knows they can afford a pay cut for their child's first 1-5yrs of life. Come on...

I briefly considered hiring help for the first while after I brought home baby but realized if I wanted to breastfeed I would need to be up anyway so I decided it wasn't worth spending the money.

The lawsuit sounds so fishy to me. She alleges that she didn't have the chance to eat during her shifts. What about when the baby was sleeping? Even if she was on duty, she could eat when the baby was sleeping. (I'm not saying that is fair, but it is a different story than not being permitted/able to eat) And there is no way she went 12 hours without needing to use the bathroom!

Lots of celebrities breast feed, including Alanis Morisette is has said she would be willing to bf until her son self weans. :) Having a night nurse/nanny has a lot more benefits than necessarily taking the task of feeding. :)

Babies wake for a lot of reasons besides wanting to be fed. The nanny can soothe or bring the baby to the mom or put the baby back to sleep, so I don't think having a night nanny at all means they aren't breast feeding. If I was super rich and worked the kind of schedule a celeb did, I would hire help too!

I don't know about celebrities but I used to work as a nanny for an extremely affluent family. The mom had a baby nurse around the clock for the first 6 months of her third baby's life. She did breastfeed, the baby nurse slept in the nursery and brought baby to mom during the night or would give pumped bottles of milk. I will say, this mom did have a family emergency happen early in her baby's life and I think that played a big part in why she kept the baby nurse on so long.

I will say that for them there were occasional issues where the mom would go out a party and the baby nurse felt the mom should have pumped and dumped so she dumped the milk and gave formula instead in those instances. I know they supplemented with formula but I don't know if the mom knew this was happening or not.

It certainly was an eye opening experience being in that environment, but at the end of the day the mom had a lot of help and it let her be a great, super involved mom and it's what worked for their family.

@Mrs. Lemon-Lime: in most cases, you're right. But both sides of my family (mom's side and dad's sad...they're actually distantly related, lol) are old order German baptist brethren, one of the 3 official "peace churches" in the US--- similar to Quakers (except they also dont have tvs or radios or imternet)they are exempt from the draft, are pacifists, and were not allowed to own slaves (or they'd be kicked out of the church).

However, having huge families was common (my grandmother was one of 14) and sending your older daughters out to take care of other people's babies after the age of 13 or 14 is what most families in that community did. Several of my dad's aunts worked for my mom's mother, as live in nannies, until they each got married. Since they don't believe in higher education (for men or women), child care and cleaning is the only way they can earn money as women.
