This is a worthwhile view if you haven't already seen it! Calmed my apocalyptic thoughts down a little.

Climate change is so scary. Our state is currently experiencing a drought and we NEVER have droughts. It's CRAZY! And we had an extremely warm winter and a warm/dry summer. We at least live far enough away from the coast that I probably don't have to worry about being underwater in my lifetime, but I definitely worry about how the rising temperatures will affect my children and my grandchild.

This comic is a great depiction of how the Earth's temperature has changed over time.

https://xkcd.com/1732/

You can really see how we've really messed things up this last century and if we don't get things under control, it won't be too long before more and more animals, and maybe humans, go extinct!

My family's resort is on beachfront, so I think about it all the time! It's crazy to think that in 20 years or so, this could all be underwater.

I definitely think about all of it...climate change, the effect on water resources (look at California and the western USA), desertification. In many parts of the world people's livelihoods are literally drying up, creating migration, tensions and strain on already scarce resources. Some even say the Syrian crisis is partly due to climate change. We live in Austria and I hear that last year the ski season was terrible (no snow or the season started very late). Some of those multi-generation family-owned resorts and stations are going to close. The NYT had a really striking article on climate change in Bolivia.

http://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2016/07/07/world/americas/bolivia-climate-change-lake-poopo.html?_r=0

Knowing what we know now, I wouldn't plan on settling into beach-front property or even in low-lying areas prone to flooding or rising oceans.

Looking far into the future, I wonder, are my kids are even going to know what a snowy winter looks like? What is the world going to look like in 2080 when they are approaching 70 years old? Will Manhattan (where my son was born) still look the same?

@Mrs. Sketchbook: away from the coast. No one around here seems to give it much thought, but in another 15-20 years this neighborhood might become very hard to live in, and if another big hurricane comes through...

Thing is, many parts of NYC that we like have this issue to some degree, and because DH isn't willing to move far away I'm kind of paralyzed with indecision. There's no point uprooting the family only to have the same problem somewhere else.

I've been telling my husband we need to move to the mainland already (the Bronx) since we're on an island (Bk is on Long Island). We live in a high area, we weren't affected by Sandy, but that damage Sandy did scared me. At my job we're doing a lot of Sandy recovery from places that are not too far from where we are.

I do think it will impact her life, but hopefully not as bad as my nightmares are. The effects of climate change scare the crap out of me.

@Mama Bird: would you specifically want to move away from the coast or just somewhere more rural? What would be better in terms of climate change? You do have a lot of resources in the city...

Yes. We live in NYC, on the coast. I moved here before Sandy, and we probably should have left before DS was born but back then we were still trying to save up for a bigger place. And now we've put down roots. At some point in the next few years we'll need to move, before we're forced to do so. Which really sucks because it's not easy to become part of a community in NYC, and I don't want to take the kids out of their community. And that's probably the smallest way in which climate change will affect their lives.

@Bibliolove: the prevention piece feels a little paralyzing to me possibly because I live in a rural area so driving is a bigger part of my life than I would like. But we did recently move toward the center of town which has made things better re: driving. I think if the election goes the way I want it to go I would feel a little better. I feel like Obama has done as much as public opinion will allow.

I think some effects are inevitable so the "preparing" piece is more interesting to me. Things like rain barrels, planting non invasives, etc.

I wonder if anyone would avoid moving to the coast or drought prone areas?

I shudder to think of the kind of world my children will have when they are my age or older.

Yes, I think about climate change almost every day. I think about what I can do in my life to reduce my impact on the world, how much trash I toss, the products I use. What I can plant in my yard, how much I drive.

I worry for the future generations. It's one personal reason why I want just 1 or 2 kids! I don't want to add, in great numbers, to an already exploded population.

Would you ever make a big life decision based on climate change?

I listened to a story on NPR about how some large cities are already employing people to manage the effect of climate change. Denver, for example, is planting a ton of shade trees as a way to combat heat issues in low income neighborhoods.

This is something that is increasingly on my mind. Our area is experiencing a drought plus really severe high temperatures at the moment!
