My field is pretty specialized and normally requires a masters so there is no way I could do what I do without a degree.</p> <p>In my last two positions, I've replaced someone who did NOT have a degree and the position was much lower paid than what I make. College was where I learned to live independently and I also made life long friends. Currently, I am staying at home with our daughter and I really have no idea when I am going to go back to work. The last job I had I was managing a wine bar...something I could have done without a degree. My DH, on the other hand, went straight into the work force after high school and now makes a lot of money, and has the opportunity for a promotion every two years. I graduated when the economy was hit hard and no one wanted to hire a college graduate with little experience. I ended up working for my DH's friend's family business, and it was a worthless job experience for me. There are certain fields that you need a degree in. I don't think I would be where I am today without having gone to college and getting my degree. I also think the social aspect was very important for me to develop socialization skills but I was a late bloomer and needed that. For example, two of my close friends went to college and became SAHMs and one of my guy friends went to an Ivy League school and is now a General Contractor (family business).</p> <p>My cousin (who is a successful business owner) thinks a lot of people can benefit from taking the money you were going to use for college and opening up your business. Learning the ropes the old fashioned way.</p> <p>What's your take on college? Do you think it's worth it for the educational component? Or is it not always necessary to become successful in life? </p>
