For me, it was totally worth it. My field is pretty specialized and normally requires a masters so there is no way I could do what I do without a degree.

In my last two positions, I've replaced someone who did NOT have a degree and the position was much lower paid than what I make. Both times I've been told what a huge difference it made to have someone to have the proper educational background in that position (I work in policy and compliance).

My field also had quite a few part-time options that are fairly well paid, in case I ever want to go that route.

@lilteacherbee: There is a program now under the Obama administration where teachers pay on their loans for 10 years (I think) and the rest of the debt is then forgiven... Pretty cool stuff!

In my considerations of whether college is worth it, I look to the pay gap and unemployment gap.

I'm glad I got my degree, but I'm not sure if the Ivy price tag was worth it. I probably would have been just as well off with a degree from a less expensive school. I definitely wouldn't make my son go to college if he had some other career goal.

I think there are a lot of other benefits to college than just the degree at the end (though I do think the degree is very important as well). College was where I learned to live independently and I also made life long friends. I don't think your current salary should be the deciding factor on whether or not going to college is worth it.

@yoursilverlining: I don't think the courses I took helped me start a business? College was helpful in other ways, but not the coursework is really helpful for being an entrepreneur.

I think college is absolutely worth it. As more and more jobs move offshore, and companies thin the ranks; I think it will only get harder and harder to compete without a degree.

Also, even if you want to open your own business, you could probably really benefit from some of the courses available in colleges and universities - marketing, accounting, business, English, etc.

undergrad, yes. i think sadly, what you used to be able to get with a high school diploma they now look for minimum AA or BA.

graduate..depends. I 100% regret graduate school (just graduated in May) because I felt pressured into going straight from undergrad, when I thought I knew what I "wanted to be." well now I have 45k in student loans and I don't think I want to do what I got my degree in.

You don't HAVE to have it to be successful, but my daughter WILL get a degree regardless. Better to say you have one than not in my personal opinion.

I know plenty of degree holding people without jobs right now, so it seems worthless but it's not. We're in a recession. I know a few people without degrees making money and they work at places like Geico and the like.

I can't imagine not having gone to college! I am frustrated I haven't gotten a job with my MA yet, but part of that is because the clock is ticking before baby comes. But even if I am a SAHM (which I probably will be for the first year) I am SO glad I went to college. I feel like I am significantly more educated and informed, something I value outside of just work.

Honestly, not where I am at currently, I went to a very expensive school (almost 40k a year) and have a lot of student loans. Currently, I am staying at home with our daughter and I really have no idea when I am going to go back to work. The last job I had I was managing a wine bar...something I could have done without a degree. My DH, on the other hand, went straight into the work force after high school and now makes a lot of money, and has the opportunity for a promotion every two years. He will probably work for this company for the rest of his life.

I think it is pretty ridiculous that my DH, who skipped college, is making enough money to pay for our house, all our bills, AND MY student loans, where if I applied for a job in my field/degree I would probably end up with an entry level position making 30k a year.

Eh, it depends. Neither DH nor I finished our university degrees because there was more money for us if we started working. Now we're not even 30 and he makes well over 100000/ year. It's a case by case thing. I can never be a teacher, but I I'm okay with that.

It totally 100% depends on the person!

For me personally, if I were growing up now I'd probably skip college. But that's just because it's gotten so much easier to start websites. Back in the 90s, I really needed college to do what I do now.

I think it depends on what you want to do with your life. But really, who knows that at 18? I think I'd like to be a SAHM one day, but I don't regret going to college at all and certainly don't think it's a waste. I say that because I loved school.

Its worth it to me both because I'm using my degree and because of the experiences I gained. HOWEVER, its extremely frustrating to deal with student loans when I'm a pre-k teacher (aka will never make much more $/year than my student loan amount). Ugh!

It wasn't worth it for me. I graduated when the economy was hit hard and no one wanted to hire a college graduate with little experience. I ended up working for my DH's friend's family business, and it was a worthless job experience for me. I haven't done anything with my degree (odd since it's business & I assumed it would be easy to find something). Now I am a SAHM but wish I had a career to fall back on.

For me, it was definitely worth it - both professionally and socially. I was lucky, always knew what I wante to do, needed a degree to do it, and picked a school with a huge internship program to get my foot in the door. I also think it was a great way for me to become an adult, meet tons of new people and grow as a person!

Interesting. I always thought everyone grew up thinking college was totally necessary. But I'm meeting more and more people who don't necessarily think so and that it depends on the person and their future goals. I still want my kids to go to college though!

That being said..I don't think college is absolutely always necessary. I think it's possible to get a "good" job without a degree. I do think it's easier for men than women though.

I think that if at a young age you have a dream, a passion, and the motivation and skills to achieve, then yeah, college might not be worth it. But for me, in order to become what I am today, I HAD to go to university.

I also think it depends. It's worth it if you make the most of it. For me, neither of my parents went to college. Much like @jesslc, I completely agree that college allowed me to be exposed to many different social graces and mature socially as well. It exposed me to so many different genres of education, and I feel like I can go to a social event and have a good conversation with others because I have been educated.

It totally depends so I don't feel like I can answer generally. For me, I went to an Ivy and it was definitely worth it for me. I work in finance and employers really care about where I went to college. The name has helped me immensely.

Depends on what you do in college and what you want to do with your career. There are certain fields that you need a degree in. I don't think I would be where I am today without having gone to college and getting my degree. I also think the social aspect was very important for me to develop socialization skills but I was a late bloomer and needed that. College is not for everyone though.

I know lots of people who went to college and ended up never doing anything with their degrees. For example, two of my close friends went to college and became SAHMs and one of my guy friends went to an Ivy League school and is now a General Contractor (family business).

My cousin (who is a successful business owner) thinks a lot of people can benefit from taking the money you were going to use for college and opening up your business. Learning the ropes the old fashioned way.

What's your take on college? Do you think it's worth it for the educational component? Or is it not always necessary to become successful in life?
