If this is a community where everyone goes with a pre-selected builder, than i'd just go with that. I would only decide to go the more expensive custom route if there weren't ANY house/layout designs i disliked.</p> <p>@looch: Even if you go "custom", there are some builders who have a few designs for you to look at, and you could make adjustments according to your needs/preferences. I do agree that i would have a headache coming up with a good design from scratch. Some communities like that have really great homes, some are matchstick houses. It may go faster with pre-selected builders, though. Both would be in a gated community. If I purchased a lot, I would be able to have a custom home, but the property is expensive. If I went the other route, I would have to purchase a home from one of 5 builders. I would have some limitations as far as customizing goes, but I wouldn't have to pay for the property first (since that would be added into the total cost). </p>
