Absolutely!

I spend a lot of time driving for work and listen to audiobooks quite often. It's a wonderful experience for me. However, I don't have the attention span for them unless I'm driving. I can't force myself to focus if I listen at home. But in the car, it's easier for me.

Over half the books I've read this year have been audiobooks

Kind of. But it uses different parts of the brain/skills so technically no.

Nope. Listening and reading aren't the same thing. I'm not saying listening to audio books is a bad thing (I loved it when I had a long commute) but it's just not the same as reading books in a purely literal sense. Even when having a discussion with someone else about a book I usually can't make myself say "I read that" if it was an audio book, I'll say "I listened to it" instead.

Now is it the same in terms of ingesting the material? Yes.

No! :silly: It is listening to audio books. Not that that's bad!

Heck yes! DH likes to make a big deal out of audio books just in case anyone thinks I or him has that much time to escape into a good book.

I read an article that said listening to audiobooks activates many of the same areas of the brain as reading so that makes me think yes. I love reading and wouldn't choose an audio book except during my commute to work when it's great ☺

i wish i had the time to read books, but listening to audio books during my commute is all i can do! i think it counts for adults, but i wouldn't give up reading actual books for kids.

I would say no for a child who is learning to read and needs to count reading books that way. But yes for adults!!

Yes. I recently signed up for an Audible subscription and my older daughter and I have enjoyed listening to all of the Ramona books whenever we are in the car. We just started on the Henry Huggins books. She loves it and we have time to red physical books together when we are home.

I used to think it didn't, but now I think about learning to speak being from listening, so I do think it counts in terms of language development. I don't count listening to podcasts as reading per se, but I do notice that when I listen to them, my speaking is elevated.

I listened to my first ever audiobook last week! It turns out, I'm not the biggest fan and much prefer paper versions of books. I have two more audiobooks to listen to (all 3 were free, so not a waste of money), and I'm going to try my best to get through them.

I got to thinking though, do you think listening to audiobooks counts as reading?
