I don't think they are effective as birth control. I think that teens today see them as 'celebrities' and think that's their ticket to fame. The same way with Jersey Shore idealized drinking and doing nothing. I don't like shows like this.

Watching the tv show wasn't really effective BC but watching my older sister first hand be a teenage mother certainly was!!

@ms.janedoe: I totally agree with you. 16 & Pregnant seems more 'real'.

I read somewhere that all the moms get paid for being on the shows. However, for 16 & Pregnant, it's set up so that it goes into a trust for them, only accessible if certain conditions are met and I believe I read that it's only 10,000 dollars for their episode. For Teen Mom, they are paid per episode shot and only paid after the season airs completely, including attending the reunion shot as part of their contracts. I have heard that some of them are paid $75,000 per season, and that supporting members (ie Jenelle's mom) get paid too.

@DigAPony: I agree with this a lot.

I think 16 and Pregnant made things seem a little more..."real" than Teen Mom does. I feel like Teen Mom is a little too "glamorous."

No. Honestly, most if not all the girls they feature (and the boys) are trashy and cone from broken homes. If I were an average kid with a good home life, I don't know that I'd relate it think it could happen to me. I also don't think they talk enough about how they got there. It should be obvious, but only in a few instances have I heard the "we did it without a condom" discussion. Kids really need it spelled out (at least I would have). They have those little pre-commercial announcements that it can be prevented and here's the website, but I just don't think it's intended for birth control - and if it is, it's not really effective. (And yeah I obviously watch it all the time lol!)

@JerricaBenton: totally agree with everything you said.

I wish and hope shows like that will be birth control for teens, but every single season these girls are with jerks and every single one (just about) thinks he'll somehow change and be a great dad...and of course, he doesn't because he's
a 17 year old boy. I think that pattern probably follows in real life too; and I also think the girls who are very young and having unprotected sex probably have bigger self esteem and family issues that a single show can't solve.

One teen mom has twins and then she herself went and got pregnant again. If she cant learn from her own mistakes..... I don't think it will work for others either.

+1 to everything @JerricaBenton said. I think many/most teens who'd watch those kinds of shows would still think "yeah, but if it happened to ME it'd turn out differently" or "but my boyfriend REALLY loves me."

I doubt it. Shows like "Scared Straight" have been on since the 70s and I doubt any decrease in crime can be attributed to them. I think watching Teen Mom has little influence how much teens prepare themselves for the actual moment of protected sex... call me a cynic?

I don't really see this birth control but maybe that's because I'm out of the age where would be effective birth control. I do see it is excellent trash TV and I'm totally addicted. Can use a DVR?

I wasn't interested in boys until college let alone curious about sex as a teen, but the most effective birth control experience came when I was 15. My parents agreed to watch their god-daughter for a weekend and she became my responsibility. Taking care of a baby still in diapers who was sick (barely kept anything down) and cried at just about everything including getting a bath was eye opening. I knew babies were not in the cards for me anytime soon. I watch those pregnancy shows and now some of those teen moms are stars, so I don't think its as effective as it once was.

I'm inclined to say no. I think a more mature person sees those shows and realizes how tough it would be to be a teen mom, and how those boyfriends are never going to help out or stick around, and how incredibly hard it will be for those girls to reach their goals and get good jobs, etc. The problem is that most teenagers have that feeling of invincibility, like it'll never happen to me, or I'll be the one that it works out for and I'll have a perfect little family. I honestly don't think most teens' brains are developed enough to understand all of the consequences and are very short sighted, like if I have this baby my boyfriend will marry me, or I will get lots of attention, or I want to parent because the baby will be someone who loves me forever, etc.

I love those shows, but I don't know how much they actually work as birth control. I do think that it is important to see how much those girls struggle and how having a baby doesn't make a boyfriend stay....

I don't think it makes having baby look easy and I like how it is pretty truthful the show is. Being a new mom is hard at any age, but it is REALLY hard when one is a teenager.

I love Teen Mom & 16 and Pregnant. I don't see them as birth control anymore than Snapped makes me want to strangle DH lol! I do think that they are great for showing other options though. Most young girls that get pregnant are not aware that they can place the baby for adoption. I think it was really great that they had Caitlyn on there showing that adoption is an option, it may be tough but it is possible. It is neat to see how her life turned out vs. Jenelle, or anyone else.

I think they are good to watch, you get your trashy reality show fix and you can see the reprocusions as well as options you might not have previously thought of.

I don't know, because I think some girls see how eventually these teen moms end up with nice cars, smart phones, and the ability to go out and do fun things, because of the show. They then see the good side and drown out the bad, and think that "well if I get pregnant, maybe I can have all that too." In reality though, this is not the case for most "normal" teen moms. I think some teens forget that though.

Or any of those shows, 16 & Pregnant, Teen Mom, Teen Mom 2?

I've watched them since they first came on in 2009 (or maybe late 2008) and I was 18/19 so not too far from the target audience.

I found them to be quite effective! I watched these girls get shunned at school, lose friends, fight with boyfriends, and sometimes even get kicked out of their parents' houses! No one was happy for them or excited about the baby (except maybe a few friends or their parents would come around by the end of the pregnancy) but it really magnified the complexities of getting pregnant so young and outside of a stable relationship (a few of these girls got pregnant from one-night stand type situations!)

I still watch these shows and I hope there's something similar when my son is of age. Do you think they're effective pregnancy prevention? Would you watch these shows or something similar with your kids (once they're of age)?
