Does anyone remember Cabbage Patch Kids? They were the big toy in the early 80's and I had to have one. They'd sell out in minutes at the stores and there was no ebay back then. My parents arranged for me to get one from a store in Massachusetts, so yeah, they went above and beyond. I'd do the same for my son within reason. Not for every item, but once in a while, I will indulge.

We want to avoid this as much as possible. Neither of us ever had name brand clothing, fad toys/tickets, etc. and we feel like it taught us many valuable lessons which we would like to teach our kids. We would much rather spend our money on things that will help our kids make memories like vacations and camping trips than a toy they will be tired of in a week.

Depends. If it was something that my kid was already into (such as Elmo), I might consider it. But it's much more likely that I'd search diligently for it.

I wouldn't mind if it was something I found appropriate and meaningful and if LO helped in some way to contribute to the cost. But I won't just buy them things just because it's popular.

Totally! :D
Unless I'm really against it. Like I CAN'T stand Hannah Montana and refuse to buy my niece any HM stuff.

Probably. At this stage in life I am so grateful for my baby that if she really wants an "it" toy, I'd probably pay extra to get it for her. The trick will be not to spoil her.

Over the retail price? No way Jose! I'd rather be a smart shopper like my mother and get my shopping done in October (and maybe get the more fun and less popular things instead) than fight through the throngs of mothers toward the sole man dangling a ZuZu Pet for $100!

I remember in college working at Toys R Us during Christmas, and there was this one little animatronic dog (Fur Real Friends - Biscuit?) that cost $200. The display was completely untouched until the commercials started airing in our area on December 23rd. It was chaos when I worked on Christmas Eve! There were grown women CRYING over the fact that we had none. I was accused at one point of hiding them "in the back" so one woman specifically couldn't buy one. My favorite was a woman who noticed one woman purchasing the last Biscuit we had and trying to convince her to sell it to her for $500!!! I promised myself then I was never ever behaving like that- so many of those older kids/fathers were so embarassed! Hell, I was embarassed FOR them!

Over face price, no. But I'd search it out months in advance for Christmas so that I didn't have to.

My friend has a rule that if her kids really want something if they earn and save enough money for half of it she'll match the other half. I think that's a cool idea.

Fad things tend to date themselves so fast. Remember when it was monchichi, furby, and tickle me elmo? Maybe Elmo, but only because he's still a star...

No fad toys here :) We're sticking with the classics!

Oh definitely not! I am soo against spoiling and giving into a kids "demands".

It might be nice as a surprise every now and then - say if they did great in school or were really obedient for a week, I'd love to reward them and show my appreciation by doing something extra special. So if it's a toy they were really wanting or tickets to something I know they'd love, I might try to get it.

But as a regular thing? definitely not. I plan to be a pretty frugal parent, no matter what our income level becomes. I grew up in a modest-income family but still feel that I had so much "stuff". But I did appreciate what I had, and I'd like my son to be the same way, even if we make more than my parents did when I was a kid.

ehh, probably. we usually got the 'fad' from Santa and it was so great (when you're a kid). I remember classmates not getting the 'fad' and being heartbroken. not that materialism is something I want to teach my kids, but sometimes there's just certain things that I'll give myself a free pass on lol.

ETA - wait, just saw you said pay over the price. no, i wouldn't do that. but I would search out the item diligently or in advance - my aunt spent WEEKS looking for a leapster leap pad this past christmas season for my cousin and finally got one! she said the joy on his face christmas morning was worth every early morning lining up at target!

Do you think you would pay over face price for hot items for children....like past trends like Tickle Me Elmos, Pokemon cards, Hannah Montana tickets, etc?
I don't think so but who knows!
