@josina: So, I gave her a some homemade treats, a card expressing our gratitude, and a check. I'm just glad I finally figured something out...Google was less than helpful. :silly:

@crazydoglady: I think it does make a difference that you're already paying her holiday pay, a gift (vs. money) would be fine!

@josina: We pay her for 2 weeks over the holiday that LO doesn't attend, Maybe that's why I am unsure. If it's more appropriate to give money, then we will do that.

@erinbaderin: I always give a gift and card, just not money. I am open to the idea though! A lot of others mentioned 100 on here, so I might just do that.

We don’t have in-home care but honestly, I think you’re wrong and should tip her. I get the feeling, it’s already so much money, but still. We get somebody in to check on our cats over Christmas and they charge us double time for the holiday and we still tip, and we always tipped the cleaner - I think you need to tip people who work for you at Christmas.

In the past we’ve given about $100 in the form of a gift card/gift cards to places we know she likes. This year we have a new provider and I’m not quite sure what to get her.

We have some years and others we have given a gift card to a restaurant. Usually we also got a gift for her daughter who is close in age to my oldest and her really good friend. We are back now after a 2-year gap with our youngest going 3 days/week. We always pay our full expected day rate even with vacations over the holidays, and we give a gift around 3-4 days rate equivalent (either $ or gift card).
She charges us so little and is so flexible and does EVERYTHING for our LO’s when they’re there. We always feel like we should give her more money so this is actually our way for her to accept it since she often won’t otherwise!

Edited to add: if she was more business-like or was more expensive or didn’t provide so much food, formula, and additional drop in care for our oldest we might not give as much.

We gave ours 100.00 and a thoughtful card. I don’t think you have to. Any gesture will be appreciated.
Eta: we were doing 3 days of day care at the time so it was 3 days plus a tip worth.

I have a nanny every other week watch my kids for 5 hours. So like 10 hours a month. I got her a $15 Tim hortons gift card, warm mitts, box of nice chocolate from a local shop.

We do a gift card and a few gifts (usually something made by the kids or customized for her). She is wonderful and my kids love her but we do not give her a full weeks pay or anything like that. She has built in days off so we pay for her vacation time anyway unlike @josina: so technically she's off from dec 21-jan 3 and we are paying her.

I usually give her $100. She's a saint for our family and has been flexible with half days and scheduling and stuff.
I totally get not tipping. ... I just read yesterday here in NY, childcare is outpacing college tuition. 15k for one child. It's fucking insane.

I'm usually super stingy but I guess not in this situation...

Since I get work off from Christmas to New Years I fell bad on my daycare losing all that money (we only pay when there, she doesn't give herself holiday pay), so I usually gift her 2-3 days, which for us is $50 to $60; and since she has 2 kids I usually gift them a new game/board game. She usually gifts us a free day of daycare and the kiddo's get new pj's.

My understanding of tipping is that you are not expected to tip the owner of an establishment. So in your case, it would make sense to give a gift of appreciation but not feel like you need to give money.

I give our home daycare lady some homemade treats and a restaurant gift card. I agree, for some reason I find it strange to give extra cash to someone I’m already giving cash to on the regular 🤷🏻‍♀️

In the past, I have just purchased a nice floral arrangement/ edible arrangement etc since it feels weird to tip a person I already pay so much money directly to. Am I wrong?
