Tip is another word for "gratuity".
Gratuity, to me, means "thank you".
If you have provided me with deliberately rude/bad service, then no tip for you. You should not be rewarded for bad behavior.

I have a huge restaurant background, so I think I'm pretty good at recognizing when my service experience is due to things beyond my server's control. A lot can be forgiven by how well a server handles a mistake, too, so I won't tip lower just because things weren't perfect.

I was a waitress/bartender for years so I feel a tip should be earned and is not guaranteed. That said, for average service they will get 15%, anything below average I would adjust accordingly. If they go above and beyond I'd give 20-25%. If someone is not only not good at their job but rude on top of it I leave an intentionally insulting amount like a quarter or nickel (so as someone else says they cant think I forgot)...

When we encounter bad service we make a point to alert management because they should know. As far as tip I leave a penny if the service was bad because then they can't think I forgot to leave a tip. I also usually leave them "tips" on how to better their service. :x

One of Wagon Sr.'s college roommates graduated from a top hotel school in the US and when he experiences bad service, he leaves NO tip. He explained to us that often, tips are the only way for a customer to communicate to the management of the establishment that you had a bad experience. So since he told us that, we tend to leave 5% for really horrible service, 15% for a fine experience, and 20-25% for a really wonderful experience.

In California waitresses get at least minimum wage, tips are extra money. I used to never NOT tip, but then I considered that tips here are EXTRA money so they should do extra to earn it. If we lived in a state where tips meant less hourly wages for the server than I might consider tipping even a dollar. I have had some very rude servers and trust that I don't tip, I consider their tip the fact that I didn't complain to the manager (: but, I'm also not afraid to over tip if our server was amazing, helpful and all around awesome (:

My MIL suggested once that if service is *really* bad (and it's the server's fault- like they were downright rude to you) to leave a super low tip (like $1 or a few cents), because then they can't just assume you forgot. It would have to be pretty bad for me to do that, and I've never had a server that horrible, but I would leave a low tip or no tip and speak to the manager if they were rude or offensive. I don't fault the server for minor stuff or things out of their control (like being busy, or food that just doesn't taste good.

If the service is poor, we usually will give a low tip. If the server is rude like yours, hells no...that's no tip. I think no tip makes a bigger statement than a lower tip, which she could just attribute to cheapness than anything she did.

If service is extremely slow (we once had to wait an hour for our food!), i will usually ask to talk to the manager and give them a chance to rectify the situation.

I would've talked to her manager if it were me. Grrr, bad service makes me mad!

I leave a low tip for bad service. Usually 20% for good (sometimes 18 depending on how much more I wanna spend and how good the service was honestly) and 15% for crappy service, but I'll go below that for horrible service, particularly rudeness. I think once I might have left a note too but I can't remember!

I do if I'm in the US, where without their tips service staff would make a depressingly small amount. Even if they did a bad job it could've just been a rough day and they don't deserve to not make a living because of it.

But, I just learned from someone that here in Canada servers don't have an adjusted minimum wage for tips--it's the same as everyone else. So somewhere like Canada or Europe--no excuses!

A mistake, slow service, not being attentive? I'd still tip, just less. After all, they could be having a tough day and they live off the money from tips.

Downright rude? No tip for you. You need to learn a lesson or get out of the service business.

I didn't leave a tip once when I had really bad service. That was only 1 or 2 times. Sometimes I will just give a crappy tip, like $1 if they did a horrible job, instead of not tipping them at all. DH's Saturday job is at a restaurant and he gets tips and he really counts on them, but he is really nice to everyone which makes a huge difference. We are also really generous tippers when someone does a good job, we also write out a note on the receipt so they can get praise from their manager.

Basically: If you deserve it, you will get a good tip. If you attitude is horrible you will get tipped based on how you acted. Even if someone is really happy, and genuinely trying, but my be new...they still get a great tip for effort.

Do you tip for bad service at restaurants?

We had the rudest waitress a few weeks back. She wasn't indifferent, but straight rude. EX: When she sat us down, there was no greeting, but she just tossed a couple menus on the table and walked away. When I asked for a water refill, she rolled her eyes like I was asking her for the biggest favor ever. And when my dish came with something I specifically asked to be excluded, she got angry with me and told me that I should have told her beforehand (which I did!).

I totally did not want to leave her a tip at all, but DH thinks you should always tip, regardless of the service. He thinks the amount is negotiable, not the act of tipping itself.

What do you think?
