We did before but need to get better about it. My parents do often, in cash, and it's never an issue. I also heard it was "illegal" but meh, whatever :)

I have never heard of this before! but we just moved to a new town and our mail carrier lady seems pretty great, so maybe I will tip her at the holidays.

So how do they know the letter/card/tip is for them? Do you put their name on it?

No, never.

But I think it actually is pretty common (at least in my area) to gift your PO worker during the holidays. My friend's dad was a mail carrier and I remember at Christmas time his house was FULL of thank you cards and treats, Sees candies, etc. They would hang the cards along their banister and I remember thinking WOW this guy is so popular haha

Yes, we're a heavy amazon usage family plus other online stores so every christmas/new years we put in a card + cash for our mail person whoever he/she may be!

We also tip our UPS guy too since he's the one that delivers most of our amazon boxes!

No, I don't tip. Why tip someone that can't accept tips? I'll probably do treats at the holidays for the mailman and waste crew. They've all been very friendly to LO.

DH and I are both the children of postal workers, so we usually do something around Christmas. He tips the garbage men too. (not always in cash...sometimes food or whatever)

With the garbage people, it's saved us some trips to the landfill because they've been willing to take things they normally would leave on the curb (due to size or whatever)

No I don't, but we don't tip much in the UK. I do give him a Christmas card and some chocs. It's probably very miserly of me but I find the idea of automatic tipping a bit baffling. If someone has gone above and beyond to give me a great service then I absolutely would tip them - but giving them a tip just to ensure they don't give me a poor service seems all the wrong way round to me.

Yes, at Christmas we do a card with either cash or a gift card and some sort of baked good for the mail man, the UPS guy, and our garbage men.

Yes, they are salared employees but that doesn't mean it's not nice to show appreciation. I'm a salaried employee, and I really can't accept cash gifts and absolutely would refuse them, but we do have plenty of clients who do things like bring us cookies or coffee, etc around Christmas time. I don't need compensation but it's nice to know the people you work hard for appreciate it.

But I don't agree with the idea that tipping results in better service. Good service should come first, followed by a tip as recognition. If I got terrible service I wouldn't tip!

We LOVE our mailman! He knows my son's name and always says hello to him by name. My son will also shout, "hi Dave" to him if he sees him anywhere and begs to go outside to say hello if we are inside when Dave comes. We got a new gate code on our front gate and when Dave couldn't open it to get to our front porch, he wrapped a box in a bag because rain was forecasted. When I specifically thanked him for that, he told me "of course I wouldn't want your packages to get wet and I can but those bags at 10 for $1". If he is delivering a package to our porch and sees that FEdEx tossed one over the fence because they don't bother to try to unlock the gate, Dave will move that package to the covered porch as well. He is always happy and adds cheer to our day. When he is on vacation, we can tell. Packages (labeled with our gate code) are tossed over the fence and we get our neighbor's mail. He has been our mailman for years and I only recently tipped him with a Starbucks gift card. I need to make it a more regular thing.

@LuLu Mom: I completely agree with you. They are getting paid a salary to do a job, why tip them? No one has ever tipped me at my salaried jobs. And from my understanding the post office benefits are pretty good. Not like they are working for free....

I feel like the expectation of tipping anyone for any job has gotten completely out of control.

Not our mail carrier. Both my brothers are drivers for ups though. I order a ton of stuff online and have deliveries almost every day. I asked my brothers what I could get our driver and he said to leave a little Gatorade or bottles waters in some ice with a note and they would likely really appreciate it! So I am going to try this soon.

@regberadaisy: a bunch of packages were missing and lots of mail mixed up at our building so someone called our postmaster who explained the training route. Some weeks are better than others for delivery! Best case is to get packages delivered by another carrier!

Absolutely not. We have a few different mail people, so not one consistent person every day. (I don't think it's a training route tho bc we have the same few people.) They are horrible. They pull off to the side just to text all the time. I get home around the same time the mail is delivered some days and I have literally sat there with my blinker on waiting to turn in my driveway while they have been playing on their phone sitting at my mailbox. They literally throw our packages at our door (one guy has quite the arm :silly: ). I'm a federal employee and it makes me cringe seeing this behavior bc I know this is exactly why some people have a bad taste in their mouth for federal employees.

@LuLu Mom: I used to be a paperboy, so I just relate to anyone that delivers something to my door. It can be a brutal job, especially when you have to do it every day in all sorts of weather conditions! Tips (or even just remembering my name) had a huge impact on me... so just trying to pay it forward.

Also, we live in an apartment building and packages get left on the lobby floor in a big pile. But ours get pulled out and put in front of our door, which isn't the usual service in our building!

I didn't even know this is a thing. I understand it's a service, but they are getting paid a salary to do so in most cases? I don't get tipped for doing my job correctly or to the best of my ability. Is that an awful way to think of it?
