Yep, through YNAB. I'd be lost without it!

Yes we track everything (down to the penny) on an App (I think it's just called Spending?). We started it two years ago and we love it. I don't feel like I can't splurge once in a while. It it definitely makes me think before a purchase. It's very eye opening to see what categories you spend the most on too! We use very specific categories - Rent, Utilities, Grocery, Wating Out, Clothes, Target, Health, etc. It was tedious at first but it's second nature now and so worth it to feel confident about how money is spent.

We track everything in a spreadsheet. Every few months I import all of our credit card and bank account transactions.

@shellio: When I was using mint more and trying to keep it helpful, I'd go in and recategorize things like Target and Amazon so they made more sense. But if it's not done regularly, it gets way too overwhelming! And it appears that all I spend money on is "Shopping"

Yes, using everydollar. It's very helpful to make sure we stay on track.

I do, using mint. It is eye opening, but tricky because I have so many amazon purchases and they all go under "shopping". Which makes sense but doesn't help me figure out where all our $$ goes - that includes dog food, diapers, cleaning products sometimes, etc.

Yes, my husband does it using mint and also a spreadsheet for putting the yearly totals on. It definitely is eye opening to see what you spend on stuff. This is our third year doing it. We loosely look at the monthly to see how we're doing. Our worst category is groceries for over spending.

Yes and we review it together each month. The categories are pretty broad- grocery, restaurants, gas, auto, utilities, travel, home repair, and we each have a discretionary category that's basically a catch-all for everything else.

I use mint.com so I can see what we spend in different categories, but since we got married and DH has taken the lead on budgeting, I don't look at it too much anymore.

We don't track expenses or budget ... we've categorized things in regards to a single month before, and it was absolutely eye-opening.

For example, do you track your spending in categories like: Groceries, eating out, clothing, etc?

I've never kept track of spending in any certain categories. I just started to track grocery spending this month though, and I will track through the year. I plan to just write down what I spend in my planner and add it up monthly and then add up the year at the end. This is more out of curiosity. I know what we spend in other bills (or I could easily look), because those are easier to keep track of.

I wanted to do it for non-essentials spending but I'm kind of scared, but maybe it would be eye opening...although we aren't big spenders to begin with.
