I travel about 2-3 times a year and most of them are one day or two day trips. I don't have kids yet, so if I go anywhere cool, the DH will fly out with me and we'll make a vacation out of it. I'll be going to Chicago at the end of this month and maybe London later this year.

Leave DH with a refrigerator full of groceries, a general meal plan and a fun outing to look forward to each day, lay out clothes for the week, and arrange video calls every night. My heart was tugged all throughout the airport with all the families but once I was working and in the city with all the adults it was nice. Oh and I arranged a play date for a few hours with a friend where he dropped her off and got some work done.

@septca: yeah I try not to micro manage too much either but if its a Monday or Friday I do leave notes about the kids nap mats and such that have to come and go from DCP.

If all else fails DH will text me with questions :silly:

@Mamaof2: Ha ha. NO. DH *will* be stepping it up... I was more getting at the second part of what you said. I want to leave him a detailed plan of action because he is rarely home for pick-up and DD's dinner, but I don't want to be too micro-managing about it.

(And FWIW, my DH travels a lot for work, too, and works long hours, so *I* step it up every freaking day... I have zero problem asking him to do it for these next couple of months.)

@septca: Are you asking for a game plan that doesn't involve interrupting DH"s long work hours? If so maybe your mom or MIL could come up?

My DH works long hours and when I travel he has to suck it up and become the dad - he works shorter hours at the office so he can do drop-off and pick-ups and then works again at home once the kids are in bed.

I also go over everything with DH and leave a meal plan (that is the hardest part for DH -what to feed the kids).

I don't but my DH is every week. Leaves at like 5am on Mon and gets home around 9is (or later) Thursday night. It is hard. There are nights that I would rather stay at work a little later to just finish up with something but I have to leave and go get R.

How long are you usually gone? How do you handle childcare while you are away? What are the best parts? The worst?

I will be traveling for work 3-4 times over the next two months (likely 2-3 nights away each time) and I am trying to make a game plan for my absence. DH is a great dad, but he works long hours, so me being away is going to take some adjustment. I'd love to hear how you do it.
