I travel 3-4 times a year for about a week each time. I used to think it was great but now I'm over it. One of the things I'm nervous about talking to my boss about is cutting back travel (hopefully completely) once LO is here.

I have previously, not right now, I am looking to take on a travel position in the next 3 to 5 years. I think it's just a life experience that I want to do while I can, and it will be feasible once the babe(s) are school-aged.

60-80% feels like a lot, so I would not do it right now. I also wanted to add that I felt I had to do a lot more maintenance work while traveling, so you need to address that in your proportions somehow. What I mean is you have to pack, you have to do laundry, prep your paperwork, travel to the location, etc, so 80% could feel like a lot more.

I think you have to do what you have to do, though. I have worked with folks who travel m-f and are home for the weekends and they do it so as to not disrupt schooling.

@hummusgirl: :) I almost feel the opposite. I'd rather be home with him while he's small and doesn't understand that I'm not coming home that night... but financially it'/s the difference between more and more student loans because my job is not enough to support us at all, or having extra money to do fun things (ironically, to travel).
@woodentulip: That is really helpful. Isn't Skype a wonderful thing? I will come back to your advice again.
@DillonLion: LOL
@bluestriped bee: Cool. If it were 5-10% I'd jump right on it!

I travel about 5% and it's a nice break from staying in the office. I took about 6 business trips last year. I don't have kids so I thought it was great. If the trip is on the east coast, I can make a trip out of it and visit my family. I might be going to France so it would be nice to take a few days of vacation to visit and not have to play for my plane ticket. If I go, I'll pay for DH to come with me, too.

@pastemoo: One other thing--in terms of travel and child care, I would personally probably want to ensure that some of the care was still done by a family member (if not the other parent, then a grandparent, aunt, uncle, etc)...and if possible, if I were faced with travel, I would try to get it on a really reliable cycle so that family plans can be reasonably made around it. So not necessarily ALL the care ALL day, but it would be less stressful for me to parent from afar if I knew that my kiddos were home with someone come supper time!

My kids are still young--20 months and 4--and I am pondering a return to the workforce, but for me a long commute and long daycare days makes me a little panicked, knowing that my other half is gone that 25% of the time. If I knew that my kids were in our house, with a family member, I would be so much happier to be in transit.

I know a lot of people who have nannies who have become family members too!

Oh, the other thing--when my husband is travelling we also use skype a lot, and I know that it makes it much easier for the kids AND for him.

He will often read bedtime stories over skype to them, if I am having a particularly challenging day, he will give them a stern talking to, etc. So even while travelling, you can absolutely participate actively!

Sorry if I am being annoying. I should probably just go to bed. :)

@locavore_mama: LOL. No, But maybe for a bajillion dollars.
I wish I knew what my dream job actually looked like right now. I mean it's premature to think about it since I haven't been offered the job--but I did apply and so I am thinking about what a realistic amount of travel is.

I am writing this from a hotel room so yes, I travel sometimes! It's rare though. 60-80% sounds like a lot so it would depend on the specifics for me. Is this forever, or would you be paying your dues now and could cut back in a year or two? How much do you need the pay increase?

The younger the LO (0-3), the more likely I'd be ok doing it since they won't remember you missing things (as hard as that would be on you). I think as soon as they really start to get it, I'd prioritize being home more.

That said, totally agree with @blackbird on the adult sacrifice thing. I think of all the people working in the US so they can support family (including small children) in far-flung places and well, 60-80% doesn't sound so bad! These are things parents do to provide for their families.

@pastemoo: nope. Seriously. I have opportunities to make a lot more at my job currently m. And I'm not pursuing it because it means more job responsibilities. Which means more time at work. Maybe when the kids are older.

If you recall i have been thinking of giving up my dream career for a job that potentially pays less for more time.

Besides a million isn't much these days. ;)

@mediagirl: Thank you for that input. That helps a lot.

I am going to go to this interview but I don't know if the travel will work (or have to work) or not.

@locavore_mama: What about for a million bucks?

@woodentulip: I agree that the travel won't be easy at all.

@blackbird: I want to hug you right now. Thank you.

I travel for work sometimes. I hated it before I had E and am vocal about only going when absolutely necessary. I usually end up at remote military sites in the boonies.

However these are the sacrifices adults make when they have jobs that feed and clothe our families so if I had to do it often and it meant a far better life, I would.

I don't work, so my perception is a little biased!

My husband travels only about 25% of the time, and even that is a lot for our family.

He has missed a lot of concerts, lessons, milestones and more. He knows that we are both sacrificing for our family, but in our ideal world, he wouldn't be gone so much.

If the job means a better life for your family the long run, that's worth thinking about, but I don't think that the travel will be easy--even once you get used to it!

***again, I am a biiiit of a AP style parent, and my opinions come through that lens!***

I used to travel a lot for work (75%). I was not married and young, 25. I loved it then. I made a lot of money by traveling. When I took this job, it was 50% travel. I was okay with that until I had M. Now, I haven't traveled since I was 34 weeks pregnant. I have to travel in April and I'm already dreading being away 4 full days without her. I've never even been a night without her yet! I don't think I could do 50% with a kid. It would hurt too much to miss out. It already hurts to miss her during the day 5 days a week, 9 hours a day.

Do you have a position where you have to travel for/with work? How far? How often?
Did you have to scale back travel when you had kids?

I grew up with a dad who traveled 50% (or so) for work and I felt that he was gone most weeknights. Of course that comes from my perception as a child and may be totally off. I missed him a lot growing up.

And now I am thinking about a job that may have 60 to 80% travel for work. Would I regret it?
Would you change your work travel during a certain age group only?

How much would you/do you travel for work? If you got paid more, would you be more willing to travel? What is the limit for you?
