For our closests friends, we treat them like family. We live far away from either side of the family so our friends are our families!

I'm close with my family, definitely not the inlaws. I have trouble even calling them family after nearly a decade of bad history together. However, I don't hesitate to call my best friend and other close friends family. They've always had my back and mine their's.

Some of my friends I've known through Yelp actually have an orphan's Christmas gathering each year. One of my friends is estranged from her family and same with her husband, so they do the Christmas thing with friends. I usually miss these gatherings, but they always sound fun and drama free.

I have a few friends who are family to me. Even when I don't get to see/talk to them often, I know I can always pick up the phone and pick up right where we left off.

I'm very close to my family, especially my sisters, and now my SIL and MIL as well. I've found that I'm much closer to my family since I don't get to see them all that often.

@LuLu Mom: I was going to type essentially the same exact thing! There are 6 of us girls who are close (hubs and kids are all friends now too) and my sister is really jealous of it but she and I took VERY different paths in life and have never been close.

I barely talk to most of my family, and many of my friends are like family. I'm closest to D's family, though. They are "our" family now.

For sure, I love my closest friends and treat them like family. I haven't lived by family since I was 18 so it's important to have great friends.

I'm not closer, but I consider my BFF to be family. I treat her daughter like my niece and call her Aunt so-and-so to Xander. I hope we stay close forever like family!!

What about ILs? Do those count as family since I didn't grow up with them (I mean of course they do, but I mean in regards to this post :P)

I would say I am closest to my DH and his family.

Yes. And not because I don't love my own family, but my family is very spread apart geographically, and I was lucky to have a SUPER close group of friends in my old city. We'd hang out together 3-5 times a week and I never felt alone unless I wanted to be.

That's what I miss most about my old city v. my new city. But I'm very slowly building my own "tribe" here, so to speak.

I'm super close to my family and only have a very small network of friends. My BFF is essentially family to me, and I treat her the same as I would any family member.

Not close at to my relatives (the people I had to endure growing up). Extraordinarily dysfunctional always and still today. My friends are much more like family to me.

Yes, my friends are just as close to me as my sisters. My sisters and I have a great relationship but not a whole lot in common. My best friends are the ones I call when I'm having a bad day, a fight with DH, or need to get a laugh in. If something funny/random/ect. happens I jump on the phone with a friend.

I will say I have 5 best friends (I'm blessed) and 3 of them have been since elementary school (my family considers them family too, it isn't unusually for them to pop up at Christmas to stop and say hi & have a drink) and the other two since HS/College. I stop in when I go home to my parents to my BFF's parents just to say hi and catch up.

My sisters have openly said how they are jealous of the relationships I have as they don't have close friends. So to answer your question my friends are JUST as close to me as family because I consider them that.

i am very close to both my family and friends. my closest friends are like sisters/brothers to me and while obvi my younger brother is #1 on that list, all of my closest friends are on that list as well.

my mom says i have a lot of "jung" (attachment) and am easily, emotionally tied to those i care about. i 100% agree.

(By family, I mean the people you grew up with... not your SO and/or kids.)

There was a column in the paper recently about how a growing number of people are deciding to treat friends like family: i.e. a lifelong committment to stay close, and to ignore petty things that often break up friendships. I used to be like that, but lately ie been in my own world more.
