@oliviaoblivia: I agree!

We TOT in our neighborhood. It's nice to run in to people we know, or have seen around the park/soccer/school/whatever.

Our street is really dark and the houses are far apart. We go visit a family friend (they have older kids who are always out ToTing, but the dad stays home and loves seeing our kiddos) and ToT in that area. The houses are also way closer together for little legs, and there are more houses that participate, and also more people around for safety.

ETA: We also don't have a sidewalk, which makes a big difference as well.

The only bummer about neighborhood hopping is the streets left empty when people want to give out candy. Last year our neighbors invited us to trick or treat with their extended family in a different neighborhood. It was a blast! Tons of kids and a really fun party for the adults! But I felt so guilty thinking of our actual neighbors who we didn't see. I'm torn because our streets were packed when I was a kid and I loved that, so I'd like my kids to have that "big" Halloween experience. But I think the community aspect is more important, so from now on, we'll stick to our streets.

We stick to our neighborhood. We live in a fair neighborhood with a good mix of pleasant neighbors. Not every house participates, but those that do seem to genuinely enjoy seeing the littles dressed up.

I get a little irked that our treat bucket on our porch empties quickly. But I try to remember that I spend less than $50 on it all (candy and non-candy goodies) and if taking a handful is what is going to make the kids happy then so be it. I don't necessarily want extras but when it empties in 20 minutes and the streets are quieting down...

Yup. We live in a neighborhood with many children and it's been nice to go right near our house. Growing up, I lived in a country setting and had to drive to different neighborhoods to trick-or-treat, so this is a bit better for trick or treating purposes.

We live in a nice, middle class neighborhood (not wealthy by any means, but suburbia with lots of young families). We ToT in our neighborhood and tonight I told my DH that I bet a lot of the kids we saw don't live here. Doesn't bother me at all! There are a few similar neighborhoods around here, but also low-income areas. Also, there are lots of country roads with not many houses. I'm sure our neighborhood is more fun with the tons of kids around and cool decorations where you can hit many more houses in the less time.

I get it. But at the same time last year we had some idiot kid soaping people's Windows and some teens walk right into a house and take all the candy and walk right out. Both incidents from people not from our neighborhood. So trick r treat where you want, but be able to be respectful and carry on like a normal person!!

I think it's important to TOT in our neighborhood. It's a nice way to meet the neighbors.
I lived on the busy TOTing street in grad school kids would come in from the country to TOT on my street. It was awesome but so expensive!

We are headed to my dad's house to pass out candy. His neighborhood gets at least 100 kids. His neighborhood is hilly so I bought juice boxes in addition to candy to help hydrate the ToTers.

We live in an apartment building, so no TOTing here. There also aren't too many kids that live in the complex, so I'm sure they go to the surrounding neighborhoods. DS is almost 2, so we took him to a church doing a trunk or treat thing last night instead.

We go around our neighborhood because there are lots of families with small kids like ours. We limit to a dozen or so houses and that's plenty for our kids right now. Growing up, we lived in a very rural area and had to drive to the next town over in order to TOT.

We live in an apartment complex so no one hands out candy where we live. Luckily the local university has a super cute event where all the students in one of the dorms hand out candy (all of their rooms open onto a grassy area). It's perfect because my 3 yo will be able to hit a ton of "houses" in a short span of time, there will be no cars, and it's super safe.

In our old city, there is a street where the residents specifically set up for lots of non- local kids. Everyone goes insane with decorations and buys thousands of pieces of candy. It was a good option since our street didn't have street lights or sidewalks.

We go to the townhouse area in our neighborhood bc DD is only 3 and it's safer and easier than going to the single families. We also have friends that live there and we go with them. Once DD gets older we may just stick to the streets nearer to us but not sure. The townhouse section also takes pride in their decorations and go all out.

We live in a very kid heavy development. We'll just take her out in our neighborhood. I think going to a neighborhood you don't live in (and have no connection to) is kind of weird. As a parent, the fun part of it is seeing the neighbors.

Our little town (little, as in...the area of the town) has just 1-2 street where people TOT. Since our area is mostly apartment buildings, everyone converges on the streets of single-family brownstones to TOT, and those street go all out with decorating and handing out candy. They probably get in the thousands, in terms of TOTers. So they generally hand out crappy candy, but I still think it must be a ton of $$ and they make the experience so fun/spooky for the town's kids.

We live in an apartment building, and our son is too young for TOTing. But we're going to our friends' house for the third year in a row to hang out and give out candy. They live in a nice neighborhood that goes all out for Halloween, and last year we counted over 700 kids. Yes, a lot of them are not from the neighborhood and drive in from lower income areas or (I'm guessing) apartment buildings. Some don't speak English. No one is bothered, though. Personally, I'd rather hand out free candy to kids who don't get a lot of treats and gifts all the time than ones who do anyway...

I have always lived in the Country and not in areas where you could Trick or Treat as houses are too spread out. So going to a neighborhood where you can is the only way we could, and how my kids can.

We stay in our neighborhood because it's a great neighborhood for trick or treating. Sidewalks and lots of houses close together. If we lived somewhere where the houses were far apart, or on a busy street, I would definitely go to a more walkable neighborhood.

We don't trick or treat in our neighborhood because no one trick or treats in our neighborhood. It is mostly multi-families and apartment buildings. We do go to a "wealthier" area but the people living there get super into it and the roads are closed. I'm assuming there are a few grouchy people who don't like the outsiders coming but they can shut their lights off and ignore us then!

We don't but only because nobody gives out candy! There is an apt. complex next to us and none of the kids come over, plus there are few kids living in our neighborhood. So we go to my husband's boss' house for a party and trick or treating.

So, I grew up in a neighborhood where kids would come in from other areas; it was a nice, very safe neighborhood (majority of homeowners are faculty or otherwise affiliated with the local university, so fairly well off) but the houses are not huge and and have small yards, so they're fairly close together. So all in all, it's basically ideal for trick or treating. Kids come in from all over--like, my parents typically would buy over 500 pieces of candy to give out and still run out by 8pm. It's like the definition of Halloween central.

But I/my family had a different take on it than that author--IT'S AMAZING!! As a kid, Halloween was ridiculously fun and exciting, and the crowds just made it more exciting when you had to wait in line to get to the door of the next house, lol. and it's so fun to pass out candy as an adult too. it's a wonderful community event all around.

I live in NYC now and so Halloween is way tamer, but last year we realized our street actually gets into it (the street is closed to traffic and lots of people decorate!), so we did stick to our neighborhood/street last year and will this year as well.

We live in a neighborhood that lots of people come to. I think its because the neighborhood has a lot of children that live here, and because there isn't a through street to another road, so it is relatively safe for pedestrians.

When I come home from work, I expect that there will be cars parked in every available street parking spot between homes. I don't have a problem with it, but it can get a bit overwhelming with 85-100+ kids. (I counted the last year and the year before). When I run out of candy, I will turn off the porch light but people will ring the door bell because they can see our inside lights are on. We also get kids knocking on our door until quite late -- 9 or 9:30 last year. I don't mind giving out lots and lots of candy, but it is kind of exhausting trying to manage my own kids and handing out candy to so many kids.

@looch: Yes, that's obvious but i'm sure i would know the answer to "if you live in a rich neighbourhood, do you dislike it when the less fortunate come over to trick or treat?" :P I've read a few blog posts against the whole neighbourhood hopping concept and didn't realize people had strong opinions on such a trivial matter!

Uh, what? There were always streets and neighborhoods that were more popular than others and everyone flocks there and it's great, like a big block party?! Those houses pride themselves on putting out crazy decorations and stock up on candy knowing they're a destination for others.

I suspect that the real issue isn't about trick or treating in that article. It's about people that don't belong there and the unfounded fears that go along with it.

Our less fortunate but newer suburb is actually the one with many more trick or treat houses. We go to a friend's every year because they are our friends and we like to party. And now that we all have kids-they throw the Halloween party that happens to be in the best neighborhood for
trick or treating! It is something they are just really good at! It is ridiculous to be protective of your neighborhood on a public holiday. You may as well put up a Christmas light display and turn off the lights if people come to see it from other neighborhoods. Unless you are carding kids at the door too bad for you!! KNOCK KNOCK! Watch out for the trick if you don't want to give your treat. :silly:

We do trick or treat in our neighborhood. It's not the best because it is a bit spread out but we'll use the wagon. I think it's nice to see our neighbors for things like this so I wouldn't want to go to a different neighborhood.

There's a wealthier neighborhood across the street where the houses are actually closer together so maybe the kids will want to go there someday but I'd encourage them to stay here for the neighborly feel.

We live behind Target. Like literally there are two multi-families behind Target and we're in one. There's is no neighborhood to Trick or Treat for us.
We go to my parents neighborhood. And it's not about what candy they get, it's just for the experience and for us, visiting out of town family for dinner.

I work in the wealthiest suburb of Boston and many people around the office have suggested I bring my son to their neighborhood. Maybe when he's older?

I don't see anything wrong with it. And it's not a charity service. Give as much candy as you want and when you're out, turn off your light. That's what they did when I was little.

Uhhhhhh. We used to live in a lower income area (surrounding area around our neighborhood). The kids in areas around us live in the trailer park or in homes that aren't in neighborhoods. What do you want them to do? Miss out on trick-or-treating because they aren't "allowed" to go to neighborhoods where they can hit 50 homes in 2 hours? Nope.

We will trick-or-treat in our neighborhood. I think if we didn't have a lot of houses around, we would go to another neighborhood, too!
