I’m pro-flat sheet. There is nothing better than clean sheets!!! We use a duvet only in the winter and then a quilt or light blanket in the summer, but ALWAYS a top sheet/flat sheet.

I’m honestly baffled buy this. I didn’t know this was a thing. I even take a top sheet with me camping because I don’t like the feel of the sleeping bag against my skin. Team top sheet! :silly:

I was shocked when I found out people don't use them! I love my flat sheet. I wouldn't be able to sleep without it, I don't like the feel/texture of comforters or blankets on their own.

I do not. I find if I use one I get too hot.
My husband has allergies so we end up changing/washing all bedding once every week and a half.

In summer, yes, just a flat sheet.

In winter, we each sleep with our own throw blanket. No sheet. The throws are easy to wash and get washed every week, along with the fitted sheet and pillowcases. DH and I run very different in terms of being hot/cold at night, so this works better than being under a single sheet/comforter.

When we lived in a place that was cold, we used a duvet with just a duvet cover, no flat sheet. I would wash the duvet cover and call it a day. This seemed to be the norm where we lived at the time because it was difficult to find flat sheets in stores. Now, we live in the tropics so we only have a flat sheet (we don't usually sleep with the A/C going, just a fan). I rarely use the sheet at night, but sometimes I will if I feel a little cold.

I never used one until the past few years. Now I use a flannel top sheet for warmth in the winter, and use only a top sheet with no blanket in the summer. I always wash my blanket when I wash my sheets, however, so it's not a cleanliness thing for me. I have never understood the excitement of clean sheets.

DH uses a top sheet as his only cover 95% of the year since we live in the warm south. I use a thin twin blanket. I hate fighting over the covers. I miss having a big fluffy duvet and down comforter but it just isn't realistic for us now. Most of our top sheets live in the closet and never get used unless we use them in the car to cover the seats for the dogs or something, lol. We also never make our beds, very savage around here. Also get annoyed st the flat sheet in hotels and tear it off my side of the bed.

@Sams Mom: We use them. Everyone uses them in our home except DS (who kicks off all sheets and blankets then wakes if too cold) who uses a toddler "sleepsack." We roll down our comforters and use the sheet. DD and I also use a flannel over it in the colder months.

@LadyDi: I love the feel of a duvet/ comforter insert. It’s so warm and fluffy and comforting. But, they do get bunched up and it’s really annoying. Mine has ties and loops in the corners to keep it together and the comforter still gets bunched at the bottom. And forget when I wash the cover and have to put the insert back in. Such a pain. But I still love the feel.

I always use a flat sheet! I was surprised when I learned this was a thing. DS (3.5) doesn't but he barely keeps his comforter on.

I am also really surprised by how many people use duvet covers/inserts! I tried that once and it always got bunched up so I switched to just a regular comforter. Am I missing something amazing?

Yes, I need options while I sleep. Sometimes I'm cold, so I need the comforter, sometimes I'm hot so I just need a sheet. Sometimes it's half and half LOL

Side note - they're talking about this over at baby center too right now lol

I currently use one, but ever since we were in Scandanavia last year I have been meaning to stop using a top sheet and get two separate twin duvets for our bed. It was so nice not fighting over the covers! I have been too cheap, but it is probably worth it!

i never grew up using one, so no we don't use one now:). on the odd occasion we are at a hotel, they drive me crazy. need to find out the secret to not getting all twisted up in it in the middle of the night, or having it end up on the floor etc. :)

when i was younger i had no idea what they were and why they were included in sheet sets lol. these days they act as random table cloths or I use them for sewing :).

I definitely do, even if DH's side often gets bunched. I usually wash the sheets every 2 weeks and the duvet cover gets washed like.... 2 times a year?

@Becky: we have a couple sets of sheets for our bed, but I only really like one, so I take them off in the morning, wash, dry, and then instead of having to fold them and put them away, I just put them directly back on the bed. It's not because I'm so organized or good at time management, it's because I really hate folding sheets! I actually usually do the same with my 5 year old's bed too.

I use a flat sheet. We wash our sheets every 2-3 weeks...I've read you're supposed to do it weekly but who has time for that? We only have 2 sets of sheets and in all honesty the dirty ones sit in the laundry room until just before I need them and there is no way I'd be disciplined enough to get a comforter through a wash and dry every 2-3 weeks. Plus I'm one of those people who has to sleep with something on top of me because I feel like something's going to grab me if I don't (it made me feel better to hear Steven King say in an interview that he does the same thing).

So...what do you do with the flat sheet if you don't put it on your bed?

Every time we use them, they end up bunched up at the bottom of our bed (my husband moves a LOT in his sleep). So either I have to wash just the quilt/comforter, or I have to wash the quilt/comforter and flat sheet.

We also don't make the bed every day. I fell out of habit when DH worked overnights (so there was no point in making the bed), and just haven't bothered getting back in the habit since no one else sees it (our master is the full 3rd floor of our townhouse)
