Like others have said, when he spit up, it was much easier to just throw it in the washing machine. Now, our home is mostly hardwood. It also gives them something additional to look at, in addition to the toys you put on the quilt with them. As for the 'activity mats', I don't have one and I think that they are not as versitile as just putting toys onto regular blankets. It's worth it to have for the first few months in case they spit up or something while they're on the floor. Then you can just toss it in the laundry instead of getting out carpet cleaner.
