@betsyboop: the thing is, it is easiest to gift a blanket. Some you use and love, some you don't. A splurge that you love isn't a bad thing, those are just our biggest excess!

When we had carpet, we would just grab a comforter and put in down in the living room where DS always played. Like others have said, when he spit up, it was much easier to just throw it in the washing machine. Now, our home is mostly hardwood. We have one of those foam play mats in DS's play area and usually put down a smaller blanket in the living room for him.

We have carpet and pets, so no matter how often I vacuum, there's always fur and hair everywhere. I used a blanket on the floor when LO was really young and when she was around 4 months, bought a huge Pororo playmat for her to play on.

We were gifted so many blankets and quilts that we use them on our carpets and tile, we never bought anything special since we have so many already. But yes, since we have pets and hair everywhere, we have one down in each room and every few days I wash and swap them out.

We have an activity gym that she does tummy time on so maybe a play blanket isnt necessary. Lo is almost 4 months old so maybe it's too late to get a blanket for her. Thanks everyone!

Yep, we always have a blanket or quilt on top of our foam tiles. Looks cuter. And if there is a mess (food, diaper, etc.) it's easy to just throw the blanket in the wash.

Agree that even with carpet, having quilts is good to catch the spit up, and also to have a nicer surface (without hair and fuzz) for their hands. It also gives them something additional to look at, in addition to the toys you put on the quilt with them. As for the 'activity mats', I don't have one and I think that they are not as versitile as just putting toys onto regular blankets. (We visit a play group with lots of the activity mats and he doesn't care for them as much as toys on a blanket).

Do you mean just a little quilt or something to put on the floor under them for tummy time, etc? It's worth it to have for the first few months in case they spit up or something while they're on the floor. Then you can just toss it in the laundry instead of getting out carpet cleaner. Once my baby could crawl he didn't stay on it though so there was no point past about 7 months.

Our apartment is mostly carpeted, but I'm wondering if it's worth it to buy a play blanket for my LO. Or are play blankets more for those with hardwood floors?

If your LO did use a play blanket, when (age-wise) did they use them?
