We use a fan. When she was a newborn, I read having air circulating around the room helps reduce the risk of SIDS. Now she's older so we don't worry about that too much, but it's still nice for the white noise.

@sweetchic: adding onto what @lemondrop said, they are very small so you can easily pack one if you are traveling. or there are white noise apps.

@sweetchic: it sounds like static, like when the tv's used to go out on regular cable or in between radio stations. Most nights we don't even need one, he drops off to sleep on his own. Of course every baby is different...

Yes, we use it on nights that he has a hard time falling asleep, so not all the time, but a few times a week. That thing is magical! Not a bad idea to have one or at least find a white noise app or cd to use just in case.

We don't have a white noise machine but we do have a fish tank in his room and you can here the water running through it. Since we put him in his room at 5 weeks he has been sleeping for longer stretches.

I don't even know what a white noise machine "sounds" like, haha! Sooo... what happens when you are trying to put your LO to sleep, but there isn't a white noise machine (if you are traveling or something)? Just wondering for future reference!

yup!!! we put it mostly because his room is right next to the kitchen/dinning area and when we are still upstairs we don't want to wake him.

Yes, since day 1. We have the sleep sheep and use different sounds for different sleep (night vs. nap). If he wakes up during the night we just restart the sleep sheep and it helps cue him that it isn't time to wake up yet.

Ive nannied on & off for 10 years, worked in daycares & preschools where my students napped and I have yet to find a kiddo who hasn't slept better with white noise or soft music (one or the other as long as it's consistent). It's kind of amazing! I believe in it so much that now DH & I sleep with it :) it took a couple nights to get used to it, but we sleep much better too!

We are a fan of white noise around here! When LO was first born, it really helped her (shh-ing, as per the 5S's)...As she got older I'm not sure if help her sleep, per se, but I think it more so blocks out the noise the hubs and I make around the house.
