I don't think kids make up baby talk, they just use the sounds available to them at the developmental point in time. So "baba" is the beginning of their speech. I don't mind if they use it, but for us, it's always "yes, that's your bottle."

We talk to our LO like she's a little person. Sometimes we baby talk though. I think it's impossible not to baby talk when babies are so itty bitty and adorable.

No, we never did baby talk. I guess that it is not in our personalities rather than an overly conscious decision. I sent her to day care early and I noticed that no one did baby talk there either. So now that I think about it ... my daughter has never said the baby version of any word so I guess we did have an influence.

Not at all! Just clarifying...

On that note, it's been neat seeing Charlie shed words like "wawa" and "baba" in recent months. The other day we gave him a big bottle of milk for his morning bottle and he said, "Woah. Big Milk!"

It's exciting to see him use the right words for things!

Oops! I didn't mean that to sound accusatory. I meant more like reinforcing intermediate words... I'm sure it's hard not to join in when they use their own little short hand!

I don't think we made Charlie learn an intermediate set of words? He made up "baba" and "wawa" and a bunch of other baby talk on his own...

It's harder than you think to not use those words back to your LO!

I don't think we'll do baby talk. When I was a little girl, I remember my mom getting irritated when overhearing me talk baby talk to my dolls. She said "Don't talk to babies like that, we didn't talk to you like that!"
I think it really makes sense. The kids I know that are the most verbal and precocious are the ones who's parents speak to them in age-appropriate but normal language. Why make kids learn an intermediate set of words, then expect them to learn the right way to say things later?

No baby talk here either. Sometimes I exaggerate when I repeat sounds, like today, when my son was making a "trrrrrrr" sound. I repeated it and then varied it to "prrrrrr" and "brrrrr."

I believe that the more clearly and correctly I speak to my son, the better he will speak.

Wombat may only be 3 months old (today actually, which I didn't know until someone told me), but I ask her questions, pretend that she's telling me about poltics or something really advanced, and cringe when someone talks baby talk to her.

We don't use much babytalk with our LO 'cause I do remember reading that babies learn language faster if it's modeled correctly. I narrate things that I'm doing when she's with me in a normal speech pattern but use very simple sentence structures when I'm actually speaking directly to her (eg. no biting, more bananas?. etc.). I think it actually helps cause she seems to be understanding what we tell her (well, most of the time).

I do, however, speak in this insanely high-pitched sing-songy voice sometimes. Can't seem to stop it, lol.

I used to use baby talk with my kid, until Mrs. Bee and I met a kid younger than Charlie that had a much larger vocabulary.

We thought he was just smarter than Charlie, but then we noticed that his parents spoke to him like he was an adult. They were using huge words, like Australopithecus and onomatopoeia. Ok maybe not that big, but they were definitely using adult talk. Meanwhile, I was telling Charlie to drink his "baba" and kissing his "booboos."

Ever since then, I've tried to talk to Charlie like an adult. Has it made a difference? I don't know... but I like to pretend that it has.

Do you use baby talk or adult talk when talking to your LO? Do you think this stuff affects speech development?
