DS is 7 months and we use one for naps or sleep if he needs soothing...sometimes for car rides or shopping if he is fussy but I will take it out of his mouth if he doesn't really "need" it because I want him to be able to drop it soon.

DS loves to suck. We introduced one when he was about 3 weeks old because he was having major witching hours and comfort nursing for hours on end at night. I do believe he's now dependent on one to sleep (he fusses but you pop a paci in and he drops off almost immediately), but that's fine with me. If he didn't have one, he'd be trying to shove his fist into his mouth all night long (or freaking out because he's swaddled and CAN'T shove his fist into his mouth). It helps them get him down at daycare, too. He's a crappy napper, so anything that helps, I'm game for.

As for taking away his voice, DS still spits his paci out plenty to shout at us, and if he's hungry it's clear because he will keep spitting it out because, duh, no milk. So we haven't really had any issues where I feel like we're plugging him up or anything. He seems to find comfort in it so we'll keep giving it until we feel like he's too old.

we tried! LO would never take one. i think we had a period of a week or so where he was kinda into it, then he stopped.

pacis definitely helped during teething. DD would rub her gums on it (you can hear the squeaking)

I think pacis are easier to get rid of because you can throw them out but a thumb is attached to them

My LO is 3.5 months and just started taking the pacifier two weeks ago. It's been a complete game changer for us - she went from multiple nightwakings with the longest stretch of sleep being only 5 hours to consistently sleeping 8-9 hours and only waking once a night to eat. She also started to nap in her crib! I already worry about weaning but she only gets it for sleep and it doesn't stay in her mouth the whole nap/night anyway (luckily she is not the type to cry every 10 minutes it falls out and need it inserted b/c I refuse to play that game!). For now, it's been amazing and I hope it will continue to help us through the dread 4 month sleep regression! I figure she'll be ok like this until at least 2 (and it's better then a thumb I can't remove from her to wean) so I've got a while before I have to REALLY think about weaning :)

My son is an addict, he loves his pacifier. He doesn't get it much during the morning because he's at day care, but he really still needs it to sleep. He's 28 months and it's time to ditch it, but I just can't go cold turkey until we get him back to sleeping in his big boy room.

We use one occasionally. She isn't dependent on it but she likes it when we give it to her.

She's already trying to suck her thumb, and we would rather her use the paci since we can take away the paci but not her thumb.

I felt like some kids have a hard time letting go of pacifiers and some kids don't - and I've got no way of knowing which toddler my son will be. Pacifiers help him sleep and calm him when he's upset. He loves to just play with one - picking it up, spinning it on the tile, tossing it, etc. I gives him a lot of joy, gives me a rest from being the main item to suck on, and we'll figure out the weaning piece when we get there :)

We have used and loved the paci since LO was about a month old. I think there's such a thing as "responsible paci usage" aka don't let your kid have it for every waking minute. LO is a couple months shy of two. He gets a paci for sleep only, and gives it to me willingly as soon as he gets up. I would like to phase it out entirely soon, but he's such a good sleeper that I keep putting it off for fear of rocking the boat.

@littlepenguin: paci usage is said to reduce the risk of SIDS so that is one benefit. for my first DD, it was very handy in getting her to sleep so that was a plus. she never sucked her hands/fingers and loved the paci. if your son seems fine without one, i wouldn't introduce it now. for teething, there's a big variety of teethers that you can use instead.

We don't-- we gave C one between 1-4 months, but she would only take it occasionally, for maybe 5 minutes at a time. Around 4 months, she started gnawing on them, and hasn't taken once since (she's 9 months now).

We use one with LO. I was very against them until I read that they actually reduce the risk of SIDS and then I was sold. LO also loves to suck so around two weeks we introduced one to her and it's been brilliant. We used it a lot in the first few months but starting around four months, she only got it when she was going down for a sleep. Now at ten months she can take it or leave it. We leave it in her cot and sometimes when she's going to sleep, she'll pop it in, other times, she can't be bothered.

We do - LO will only take the Avent Soothie, no other kind! I understand concerns about having to wean them off a paci, but if they are thumbsuckers I think you would be facing a similar battle. LO is 11 months now and only wants the pacifier when she's tired or really upset. I don't plan on trying to wean her anytime soon, I think (hope?) either she will stop on her own when she is ready or when she moved up to the toddler room at school, or the pre-k room and sees nobody else has their paci anymore. We'll see!!

@andrea, I've never tried giving him one. I've been thinking about it for a while. All the babies in my parents' group have them. I wasn't sure if there was a benefit that I'm not aware of.

Will he take one? It depends on that. My baby wants nothing to do with it! She much prefers sucking her hand and fingers. She is 4 months. With my older DD, she liked it so she used it until I took them away cold turkey at 1.

I didn't want to use one at all, but my DS just liked to suck so I introduced one at 6 weeks and he never took it. He is teething now and just chews on his own hand or teething toys. He really likes the teething toys.

I've been going back and forth on whether we should be using pacifiers for our son. My main reason for avoiding using them is that I've heard of so many kids becoming dependent on them into toddler hood. I also feel like in using a pacifier I'm quieting his voice sort to speak.

I don't think he's overly fussy and he does suck his hand. My husband thinks that a pacifier might be easier to control instead of his fist or thumb. My son is almost 3 months, and I know that he will be teething soon. Do pacifiers help with that?

What do you do for your LO?
