DH did it once... I didn't want to at all! I don't even know if it worked that well. I told him I never want to do it again esp now we have kids.

once a year, otherwise I clean it by hand and keep a liner on the bottom. It gets so stinky and hot, it scares me.

Yes we do, about 2 or 3 times a year. Our oven itself doesn't get very dirty, but it's great for cleaning the gunk off our stove parts. We just remove them from the stove and stick them in the oven upside down and run the cleaning function. Beats scrubbing!

I did it for the first time a few weeks ago. Never again, it totally warped the track for the pot drawers that were next to it. Doesn't seem right that the surroundings should get that hot.

No, I've heard it can also cause some chemicals to leach out into the air so that freaks me out. I usually clean with a paste of baking soda and water. Leave it on overnight, spray with vinegar and wipe down, and everything comes off!

We did it once, and while it worked, I didn't like it at all. It stunk to high hell. I also read somewhere that it's actually not good for the oven and cuts the life of the oven down cause it has to work for soooo long at such a high temp that's it's not really made to work at.

Yes! Use it twice a year. That way you dont have to use any chemicals when cleaning the inside of your oven. You have to think about too, when you are cooking something, not only is it going to drip on the bottom if it over flows, if anything is bubbling it will splatter on the top and sides too!!

No. I have oven mats (similar to http://www.bedbathandbeyond.com/store/product/chef-39-s-planet-reg-nonstick-oven-liner/1013037604) and if something bubbles over, the mat makes it easy to clean up.

(be careful if you have a gas oven. You can't put the mat directly on the bottom of the oven)

I just had a service guy out for a different appliance and I asked him about self cleaning. He recommended never using it. Said the prolonged super high temp can cause a ton of problems that might not have otherwise popped up. He says a large majority of his service calls for ovens are after people have used the self clean function.

This was a selling point for me when we bought the oven, but I've never used it. I think it just heats up really high and turns all the gunk to ash?
