@mrbee: @looch: omg I loved that show!!! I had no idea about all those allegations?

I feel like I never use enough. My stuff always sticks to the pan because I didn't add quite enough.

I don't think so…? But I guess "too much" is pretty subjective! I use a nonstick pan for eggs then just use a tiny bit of organic EVOO spray so I would say I definitely don't use too much for that.

If I'm sautéing veggies or something I don't measure but I don't feel like I use a lot. I feel like the times when I have followed recipes and measured out tablespoons I am generally surprised at how big they are. I would say for a pan full of veggies I probably use 1/2-1 tbspn of extra virgin olive oil.

I rarely cook in butter. The exception is I think butter makes a crisper quesadilla. I use probably 1/2 tbspn per quesadilla… which I guess is sort of a lot but when you're eating a plate full of tortilla and cheese it seems a little silly to get stingy with the calories on the butter ;)

@mrbee: You can use olive oil, it's perfectly acceptable, if you measure! I also like to use canola oil, it has a less distinct flavor than olive oil.

I use a ceramic pan for eggs, you kind of have to treat it carefully so you don't ruin the surface, but they're great pans and you don't have to use a lot of oil.

Most of the time, I measure it, too. Or i'll put a TB in a large ziploc bag, shake up the veggies in it, then put them in the pan. Goes pretty far that way.

I don't believe fat makes you fat, but it can be too much of a good thing, especially if you are trying to lose weight. 1 TB of olive oil doesn't make you more full than 1 tsp

@mrbee: Haha! The turning point for me was when I started weight watchers. I had to track points and I was wondering why I wasn't losing weight. Well, I had to count in the fact that my egg white omelet was made with olive oil and that squirt of oil was costing me 4 points out of my 26 point daily allotment. I went home and measured out what those 4 points equated to and it was a game changer.

I do agree it is a healthy oil, BUT there is a difference when you are using a teaspoon across an entire recipe vs a teaspoon in one serving.

we use a lot. Like an above poster said- we are not afraid of fat in our house.
The sweets/ sugar is something we always want to cut back on but it isn't unusual for us to have full fat everything in the fridge.

@mrbee: Well when I make my eggs I use cooking spray (like a 1/4 a second spray). But for other things, yeah I just pour the oil in to a measuring spoon and then pour it in to the pan/pot.

I used to. But I do the paper towel trick. It's not much of a trick - just get a towel using kitchen tongs and soak some up. It's fast and easy and no need to worry about spilled oil on the side of the pan.
