I don't plan to nor do I plan to buy a whole crib set. They're too expensive in my opinion. And I'm jut not a matchy matchy person.. I just have sheets and I bought a mesh bumper so her limbs won't get stuck between the rails.

@BabyLove: The thing that confuses me about the bumper being a SIDS risk is that this suggestion just recently came out. 5, 10, 15 years ago it was perfectly acceptable to use a crib bumper. Between then and now, the SIDS rate has not gone up....it has stayed relatively the same since 1994. So I wonder why all these rules are changing when the number of babies with SIDS stays the same?

I plan on using a crib bumper once I transfer my LO from bassinet.

I feel as though it might be more of a suffocation risk than a SIDS risk..I just read a (sad) story about a baby who died of SIDS just in his rock n' play..nothing near his face.

anyway, I was bumping because we're not buying a whole set I don't think (as sad as this makes me because the one we want is SO cute..) but I registered for a mesh bumper, and I'm thinking of buying a $30 Carter's soft pink one. I know quite a few people that use it without problems, so I'm just torn.

I've read some negative reviews about the mesh ones..anyone shed some light? i read on bru that they're hard to attach and sag?

I didn't even consider for a minute using a bumper. If there is an identifiable SIDS risk that I can easily avoid then I am going to do it. I look at it as, if the worst happens and the "risk" becomes a reality could I live with myself ? A definite no on this one.

I'm so glad someone posted this. Our bedding set came with a bumper and I plan to use it until LO can roll over, then I'll probably switch to a breathable one or leave it off if LO is a good sleeper.

We used a regular crib bumper from Pottery Barn until LO was able to roll around on his own. Then we used a breathable bumper. I didn't really notice much head bumping or anything like that so I didn't worry about that too much.

Yea, I think if I'd been putting her in the crib when she was a little babes I would of taken the bumper off. But for now, it seems more safe to keep it on than to take it off.

I definitely won't be using one, in fact I custom ordered bedding, and am not having a bumper made. I *may* consider using a mesh bumper, but only if we find our baby is re-currently getting stuck in the bars.

I plan on being a "bad mommy" too. My husband's little brother broke his arm in his crib when he was little, and I know someone else that had their daughter hit her head so hard so broke skin. I'll be using them for sure.

The play pen we ordered has them come with it as well, so Cameron will be used to them since day 3.

@pipers mommy - add me to the "bad mommy" list because we totally used our crib bumper since we brought our DD home, AND she's been sleeping on her belly (for naps) since she was 1-month too. for nighttime sleep we swaddled and she was on her back.... but as soon as we transitioned her from her swaddle she was a belly sleeper all the way.

I wonder if you can use a breathable bumper and then attach soft bumpers to the bars of the crib. That way it doesn't restrict airflow.

Well this is comforting! I'm glad there are others using them. I can't understand why they're sold if they're like, the worst thing ever- ya know? I'm not worried that she'll suffocate. Afterall, she's obviously strong enough to flip all around. So I guess I'll continue using it.

We use ours too, when she is awake in her crib she loves looking at the animals on it. In the last few weeks she has really started to move around in her sleep and gets herself stuck up in the corner and screams bloody murder till we put her back in the middle (just for it all to happen again a few hours later).
My LO also sleeps on her belly, and has since she was a month old, she just wasn't happy on her back. After speaking with the pediatrician, we decided to try it and she has slept 8+ hours a night since.
so I might be the worst...bumper AND a belly sleeper.

I have read that you're not supposed to use the padding that comes with many bedding sets. Ya know, the bumper that goes around the bars.

The AAP says that it is a SIDS risk. That it can cause suffocation, entanglement and injury. I had assumed that this is more for the little, little babies. No?

Either way, I must confess- we use ours! Our babes is 5 months old and she is such a wild sleeper! I mean, I'll place her down in the middle facing one way and when I check on her she'll be diagonal on the other side facing a different way- WILD. We tried to take it off one night and she woke up hysterical when she hit her head. It went back on immediately.

Am I the worst parent ever?!
