I try to save big purchases for her birthday or Christmas but I don't think that will last too much longer because she has an October birthday and next summer she will be ready for a balance bike. We did a kitchen for her birthday last year and a kitchen helper for Christmas. This year will be a bitty baby for knee of them but I'm not sure if we will do a second big gift or not.

We got our girls nothing for their birthdays this year. Well--we got them a party in a fun play space with their friends, and all their friends brought gifts and frankly, they don't need any more. As it is, I unwrapped to write thank you cards and then stored the gifts and are just going to give them out throughout the year until Christmas.

My oldest is only 3 and even though we gave her only 2-3 small presents this Christmas, with the 2-3 gifts from my mom and the 2-3 gifts from my in-laws (none of them "big" or expensive), I noticed she had gift fatique big time and didn't care about or appreciate the gifts in any way after the first few she opened. So now when I know other people are bringing gifts, we don't do any at all. I think 2-3 total from everyone is a good number for us per holiday.

Yes, we usually get one bigger gift and then fill in with smaller gifts. Same mindset for Christmas.

Ideally I would save big gifts for her birthday but it hasn't actually happened because her birthday is at the end of the summer and I have given her things like her scooter, bike and water table at the beginning of the summer.

This year she doesn't really need anything big so it will be a few smaller items for her birthday.

@looch: so far he has just been circling things in the Lego catalog. I'm going to wait until much closer to his birthday to buy anything because I suspect there will be some influences once he starts school.

@lamariniere: What does he want this year? My son is asking for Hot Wheels, Lego sets, stickers and a toothbrush, lol.

@looch: this is how we've been doing it. My son wanted "a bike with pedals" for his third birthday, so that's what he got. Last year he didn't have anything in particular in mind but he was in a big Lego phase so I took him to a toy store to pick out a set. I gave him a budget and he had no problems staying within it.

For his first we got a play kitchen (IKEA) but for his second it was smaller gifts. We will probably just decide year to year based on what he wants or needs.

Yes, he does. The thing is that I want to give my son some magic while he's still a child, so if he expresses that he really wants something, I accommodate. I would rather him get one big thing than 10 smaller things, but if he wants 10 small things, that's the gift.

My son also does well with accepting one big gift for both his birthday and Christmas. Last year, it was one gift. This year, he's already started his list and it's a lot of small stuff, nothing large.

She only had 1 birthday so far, and I didn't really get her anything. I think when she's older, I will let her request a big-ish gift that I normally won't just get her, and combine it for bday/Christmas. I don't really want to promote expecting big gifts on birthdays!

Only if I think there is something big that I'd like her to have, and in the past, we have let my dad buy it (he likes to spend a lot on her, so I try to take advantage). We asked him to get her a play kitchen for Christmas two years ago. Last year, I couldn't think of any big gifts that she would need so we didn't bother (age 2). This year, I think I will ask my dad to get her a scooter for her 3rd birthday and I plan to get her a dollhouse for either her birthday or Christmas.

I do want/need/wear/read. If one of those are a bigger item, great. If not, no big deal. I only really remember a few gifts that were big or special. So I don't think it's needed every Christmas/Birthday.

It's almost LO's birthday, and I'm trying to figure out what to get her. She doesn't need anything "big", but has asked for several smaller items. I'm thinking I'll just get her the smaller things she wants...
