I had heard that over time sediment starts forming in the bottom of your gas tank, and if you let it run to empty your engine may start pulling in some of those particles. I know I can get 400 miles per tank, so I fill up when my trip counter gets to be around 400. I've never had the light come on. I drive a Yaris and the gas gauge is bars and when it's on the last bar it starts blinking then it starts blinking really fast.
