I think I drove a few times last year when the sidewalks were not clear of if I was coming from somewhere else to pick up. The walk usually takes less than 5 minutes but depends on one light. Not sure if we will drive or put the kids on the bus. We are rural enough that all the bus stops are in driveways so you can wait by your own garage and run down when you see the bus. I grew up walking to school alone in a small town do it will be different no matter what we choose for our kids. There isn't one within walking distance, unfortunately. I'm not looking forward to packing up both an infant and toddler for an early morning car ride each day. Elementary school, however, is a five minute walk. It's a big part of our choice to live here. So convenient. Our neighbor kids walk, bike, or wagon to school! I envision us walking, hopefully taking turns with neighbors doing a walking school bus type thing. I expect traffic to be motivating in the morning. It is in my parents' neighborhood since they take him and they love that they can walk. It's about half a mile I think. Elementary will be a 5 minute walk. I see it as a huge advantage. If we lived further, she would take the bus rather than drive her and contribute to the congestion. It's about a 15 minute walk with a 3 year old. LO goes to the local charter school, which is a 5 minute drive. He takes the bus, and it's so cute seeing him form friendships with kids outside of his classroom. It's less than a ten-minute walk (plus a few minutes if we stop by the produce stand for some fresh fruit with dinner). For actual school, I imagine it would be an enormous plus to not have to sit in that line of cars doing pickup/dropoff. Instead, I drive my son to a school 2 towns over because of the program that is offered. It takes about 45 minutes on a bad day, a little less on a good day, but I am also commuting to that town for work. I prefer driving vs the bus because it gives us a few more minutes in the AM and we aren't rushing to get to the bus stop at an exact time - driving allows us to leave between 8:10 and 8:20 - the drop line goes super fast! Since it's been nice lately we've been walking home -- which is about a 15-20 minute walk. In the winter when it's super cold and/or snowy we'll catch a ride with neighbors or Uber. It's only 2 stops. But we've walked a few times and it takes 15ish minutes, depending on how much dawdling is going on. I am super grateful I don't have to wait in the insane car line every day. Winter mornings might be tough but we are in TN so it doesn't get too bad, usually. If so, how long of a walk is it? If not and you drive, how long is the drive? DH wanted our kids to go to our local school because he thinks being able to walk is a huge plus. While the convenience is really nice, there's another school I would have preferred they go do. He thinks driving would be a drag, but I don't necessarily see it that way.
