I don't but my husband does. I would be more open to it when my kids are a lot older but I just don't like the risk of having one with small kids. I think the fences around pools are really unattractive so I would just rather not. I would love to have neighbors and good friends with a pool to enjoy though :)

No way! We actively avoided polls when we were house hunting. There are plenty of pool/exercise clubs around here, so if I wanted to use a pool I'd join one of those. We (unscientifically) observed that houses with pools seem to stay on the market longer in my area.

No way. We live in a region in thr US where every third home has a pool. We looked long and hard for the right home without a pool. There's too much liability risk- fences, covers, locks- and even then if someone hopes your fence and drowns in your pool, you are still at fault. I like that my neighbors have pools, and that our best friends let us use theirs anytime. But I do not want one.

If I lived in a warmer climate I think I would want a pool. Living in Pennsylvania, I would only use for three maybe four months a year. Not worth it for me.

I wouldn't want a pool. Owning a house comes with enough chores and headaches, I wouldn't want to add another thing to deal with. (She says as she mentally preps herself to clean her newly-replaced oven ... after having replaced the washer and dryer in May, the A/C in the spring, and the dishwasher last year. And that's just the big stuff! We've also replaced valves and faucets, redone the landscaping, built shelves, etc. etc. I love our home, but it's a never-ending source of work and expense.)

That said, we looked at some houses with pools because they're common in our area. If the right house had had a pool, we would have bought it. However, I really don't need another chore in my life and I'm glad we didn't get one. I would have contemplated filling it in, because I don't think they look very nice and I regard them as small-scale environmental disasters (water use, chemicals, plastic junk that people buy for them, etc.). If I wasn't relatively close to the beach or a public pool, I'd just find some other outdoor activity to enjoy, like hiking.

We also prefer plants to pools as an aesthetic matter. Most pools are not very pretty, but our garden is and it costs very little and provides us with plenty of exercise and satisfaction. It's also a really social activity. We're often out in our front and side yards tending to the garden, so we met all of our neighbors and everyone who goes on walks within a few months of moving in. Plus LO has a lot of opportunities to get dirty, which I think is important. We've also learned a ton about our local and native plants (and small animals, insects, and birds!) and how to have an attractive garden with nearly no fertilizers or herbicides, which is fun.

We have an inground pool. When we purchased this house (4 years ago) I was against the pool because I was worried about maintenance.

Turns out it isn't bad at all. We have a robot vacuum that does all the work and once we close it for the winter, we don't think about it at all. I love having it now, we can just pop in for a quick swim on the weekends without having to lug everything into the car and out in public. I finally have it set up how I want it with chairs and umbrellas.

It is a traditional chemical pool, my husband aerates like a lunatic so we don't use that much chlorine at all. I think I saw him put it in twice this summer. We also have a heater with a propane tank to extend the season. When we bought the house we had the pool inspected and the inspector told it us it was a liner pool, which I thought meant it was like swimming in a plastic bag, but it isn't at all. The liner was 2 years old when we bought the house and has another 20 years in at least.

@bluestriped bee: I went from renting to owning w/ a pool ( prior homeowner's installed it), so I didn't have a chance to compare insurance premiums. One thing though many of the insurance carriers require the pool is enclosed by a locked fence; otherwise, the carrier would exclude the liability for the pool.

@bluestriped bee: another question is if the pool is set up for chlorine or saltwater. Saltwater pools are easier to care for and better for your skin.

Also if the in ground pool is made with a liner which has to be replaced more frequently and can tear or concrete which only has to be refinished every 10 years or so.

Bumping a thread that I created (wow) 3 years ago.

@Mrs. High Heels: Yeah, a few of the homes we are looking at have one and I'm wondering if I should nix it off our list.

With twins and I did not grow up around pools, it makes me nervous.

@Mrs. Lemon-Lime: I should call my insurance agent to see how much home insurance goes up by having a pool. Did you notice a significant increase when you bought your home?

Nope. We're anti-pool (for us). My parents had one when I was growing up and after they sold that house they swore never again because it ended up being a huge PITA.

We are lucky though because DH's sister and BIL have a pool and they live 10 minutes away. We have an open invitation to swim any time we want :)

I'd rather not. It would only be useful for a max of three months a year, and I'd be worried about the safety with our kids and on the off chance the a neighbor kid wandered in or something, even with a gate and stuff. I would like to have a good friend/neighbor with one though!

My grandparents have an inground pool and we always spent our summers swimming at their house. It was a blast. It's definitely a lot of upkeep. I would prefer to have a saltwater pool if possible. I'd definitely consider buying a house with a pool whenever we make it back to GA. We could easily get 4-5 months of use each year.

Nope. My mom and my MIL both have pools and I will definitely be taking advantage of them with LO this summer. I'm glad we don't have one though, and would never want one, because I'd be too nervous about kid pool accidents. Both my brother and I fell into our grandparents' pool as toddlers and they were pretty close calls. It makes me anxious just thinking about having one.
