Its funny because I sort-of think we live in the burbs now...when the reality is we live IN Boston...as in, if the paddywagon comes, it's the Boston Police. And we have our share of crime and grime. But since we live in and among single family homes, I don't consider it 'city'. So really, it is the best of both worlds. We know all of our neighbors - which is a total testament to our annual meet-the-neighbors after-the-holidays party - and we have a small slice of a yard and access to some awesome playgrounds...but we also have access to everything being downtown has to offer from both cultural and socioeconomical diversity to one of the best children's museums in the country to just the daily experience of getting on the bus/train/subway.

We don't plan to move until the kids are out of the house - in which case, we'd probably move closer into the city :)

I love the city and in Seattle, there are neighborhoods that feel somewhat suburban but have the benefit of being in the city! We just moved here from SF so that we could have the chance of affording to live in the city....we start house hunting seriously early next year.

I kind of want an inbetween. When I lived in CA (San Diego) it felt like middle ground. We were in a city but it felt like the burbs. I want to find something similar to that. It I HAD to choose I think I would do a city for sure, there is so much to do and see instead of being stuck in one area.

We'll try to stay in the city (Chicago) as long as possible. We're thinking we'll outgrow our current place when our (currently imaginary) baby is 2. Then, who knows! Maybe we'll head to a nearby Chicago suburb, go east coast, or move somewhere unknown!

DH grew up in a small town and I grew up in a really small town. We live on a small lake with neighbors close enough to have a small town feel. We'd like to stay where we are until we grow out of our very small house and then move further out in the country. We are kind of in a sweet spot halfway between Cleveland and Pittsburgh and not much further from Columbus so day trips to a big city are not a big deal. We feel we have the best of both worlds. We're not really suburb people.

So torn on this. I love not having a car and walking to our favorite restaurant down the block, to the park, or hopping on the subway for a quick ride to Manhattan. Who needs a backyard when you have prospect park?

But the school situation freaks me out. Growing up in a suburb, there was no such thing as a bad school. We couldn't afford private schooling and we're probably priced out of the neighborhoods that have the good schools here.

I don't care so much about home owning, or having a car, and I could go the rest of my life without visiting a strip mall or seeing a cul-de-sac. But I don't want to sacrifice education and private school will never be an option for us.

We're not parents yet, but we are committed to raising our future children in the city - we are in Manhattan now, but considering the move to Brooklyn when our kids are born. There is something about city life that you just don't get elsewhere. We both grew up mostly in the suburbs, and neither one of us felt connected to that lifestyle. As long as we can swing it, we're planning to stay in the city.

Suburbs, for sure. I love having a nice big yard and BBQs and all that stuff, so I would definitely want to raise our children in that environment. Although living in the city does have its perks...

We live in the Bay Area, in a city of about 130,000 and I wouldn't mind raising kids here. We're a 45 minute train ride from San Francisco, have decent weather, all the stores that we want, people are friendly and we're 1 hour away from his parents, 3 hours away from mine. It's pretty perfect, for us.

I have no idea! I grew up on a farm outside a small town (pop 5k) and my husband grew up in the 'burbs of Detroit.

Right now we live in the city and plan to for the foreseeable future, but Dallas is no NYC, so I'm not sure its the same comparison.

My husband and I both grew up in really small towns. The closest stores to us were a 30 minute drive away. We both liked the privacy and the freedom, but I hated being so far away from everything. Now we live in the suburbs, and I LOVE it. We're close enough to everything while being in a fairly small little community. So we'll be raising our kids here! Should be fun... :)

Definitely the 'burbs... with each move we move further and further from the city. Whenever we go back in to the city to hang out, we wonder how we survived living there. I think the towns we have our sights set on are about 30-40 mins from Boston. We just want the most land and house for our money... we definitely need a yard for the kids and dogs, a garage, good schools, and streets our kids can ride their bikes on. I grew up in the 'burbs and Rob Sr. grew up in Staten Island, which is part of New York City but still very suburb-ish. All of our friends complain that we live too far from the city... just wait til we move for good the next time, into a real HOME home... we'll be even further!!

I'm a small town girl. I can't fathom raising my child in a big city. I was raised in a moderate sized city, ~75k, DH and I now live in a town of less than 30k, eventually we want to be out in the country. We travel and visit cities, however they're just not for us to live in. It's all what you're used to though!

How about small/medium town? :-)

True story: I am pretty scared of cities. I don't like to travel to them, and when I do I get nervous because I am afraid that I will have to ride public transportation, and/or someone will mug me or something. lol. We moved a lot when I was younger, always in suburbs, and when I was 9 we moved to a small town (8,000 people), hundreds of miles from a metro area. That's a bit SMALL for me.... but it's what I'm used to. Mainly I want great schools and a virtually crime-free environment for my family...

Suburbs, for sure. We both grew up in the burbs and like the feel of being outside of the city. We lived in a city together once and I will admit, it's nice having amenities within walking distance. I like having a big yard more than those amenities, though. Someday I'd like to live in a town where we have the yard and we can walk to the library or the store. That would be perfection. :)

We moved to the burbs from living in Manhattan to raise kids. I was just thinking the other day how we have a great sense of neighborhood here vs. we didn't in the city so it's interesting that we have a complete opposite view there. I think there are just as many experiences to be had here in the burbs, only they are slightly different from those being had by city kids. It depends where you live I guess. We only live 30 minutes from NYC so to say that there isn't diversity here, wouldn't be accurate.

I like the burbs and Mr. Bee likes the city. I grew up in the city and Mr. Bee grew up in the burbs. I think living in the city right now is great because Charlie is exposed to so many different people and experiences. I love that we run into someone we know pretty much every day -- we really have a sense of neighborhood here that we would never have in the burbs.

But... I am a suburb girl at heart. I like the space, I love driving, and I'm more of a homebody. We're definitely going to stay in the city while Charlie attends elementary school, but I don't know what we'll do after that.

Are you planning on raising your kids in the city or the burbs?
